$36,000 buys one gold Rolex.

That might get you one meeting with a very minor official in China.

Everything to do with government (often in the private sector too) costs a lot, with no results guaranteed.
Did you read the article? The meetings have already happened. The money is to fund a project in Shanghai that has been organised and approved by the Chinese government. They want to get involved and send teams to the 2017 festival of World Cups.

Yes, I read it. I have known a couple of fairly big companies who had visions of setting up relationships with Chinese counterparts, and I am simply reflecting what they told me of their experiences. There was always the need for another meeting (oh, and don't forget the Rolex), or another all-expenses paid "study trip" to Australia.

That's the way it is there. If somebody wants what you are selling, they will be genuinely interested.

I would not believe anything unless, and until, there is a signed contract. Even then, a foreign entity is always at risk of losing everything, and even of spending some time checking out the conditions in a Chinese prison.

Maybe Broughton has not been fooled, but, if so, he is one of the first.

It's a bloody sport mate, maybe, just maybe the Chinese want to play another sport along with the ones they already do, how terrible, there has got to be something wrong with this

Fair comment but I don't think the Chinese are the ones asking for the money here, it seems to be Broughton himself so he can go ahead with the initiatives that they have already agreed. I also don't think that Broughton is a mug, according to the article he's been involved in dealing with the Chinese since 1999 so I'm sure he knows how they operate.

About a month not paying the contracts of the recent departees from NRL HQ would cover the $36k.
Just do it NRL.
