Choc to stay put

MANLY second-rower Anthony Watmough is tipped to sign a long-term deal at the Sea Eagles in a deal that would make him among the highest paid in the NRL.
The powerful off-contract Australian forward is in discussions with the Sea Eagles.
No other NRL club has officially entered the fray to secure one of the most sought-after players in the game.
Plenty of clubs are prepared to have a crack at the Narrabeen junior, but it has emerged they will not get near him.
Watmough’s manager George Mimis told The Manly Daily negotiations with the club are progressing favourably, with the prospect of the 26-year-old testing himself on the market unlikely.
“I’m not talking to other clubs, I don’t know if there will be a need for that,” Mimis said.
“I hope our discussions (with Manly) can bare fruit.
“It’s a work in progress and discussions are productive.
“Choc is in the top handful of players based on his rep performances last year.
“We are hoping his next deal will reflect that.”
Should talks with Manly stall, there are no shortage of clubs interested in the Blues enforcer.
“He’s certainly a good player,” Warriors CEO Wayne Scurrah said.
“I imagine Manly will find it hard to keep a hold of him.
“He’s undoubtedly the type of player all clubs would be keen on and we’re no different.”
Raiders boss Don Furner also said Watmough would be a bonus in Canberra’s pack.
“He’s a quality player and you’d love to have him in your team,” Furner said.
“But we haven’t been in contact with his manager.”

I really believe he wants to be a one club player, just like beaver.
If Manly make comparable offers I can't see him going anywhere.

MANLY second-rower Anthony Watmough is set to remain at the Sea Eagles on a long-term deal.
The Manly Daily understands Watmough is virtually all sealed up on a four-year deal that will ensure he sees out his NRL career at the Sea Eagles.
The rich contract will put him among the top half-dozen paid forwards in the game.
Watmough was on Monday with the All Stars team at a rugby league community clinic in Blacktown.
The 26-year-old was coy about his future when asked, even admitting he could test himself on the open market.
“I actually wanted to have it sorted by now,” Watmough told the Daily.
“Hopefully I will in the next week or two after the All Stars game.
“I’d love to stay at Manly, but I’m getting older now, so I haven’t got too long in my career left.”
Later in the day, Manly CEO Graham Lowe said talks with Watmough are positive and the club is confident he will stay.
“Talks with Anthony are progressing well,” Lowe said. “Like Anthony, we’d like to have it sorted out as soon as possible.”
In last week’s Daily, Watmough’s agent, George Mimis, said he was confident his client would remain at Brookvale.
But there are also a stack of clubs eagerly awaiting Watmough’s final decision.
Watmough was in Blacktown as the NRL kicked off a Community Carnival in Sydney’s west in attempts to connect with the local community.
The NRL’s All Stars team held a skills clinic and gala day with 200 children.
Watmough was among the players, enjoying his time before Saturday’s All Stars match at Gold Coast’s Skilled Park.
“It’s the first game of its kind and being the inaugural game it should be something to remember forever, it should be intense,” Watmough said of the looming game against the Indigenous squad this weekend.
“There will always be the doubters, but I think it’s a good thing for rugby league and I’d love to see it continue.”
Meanwhile, the Sea Eagles will settle on their squad for Friday night’s NRL trial against Cronulla at Toyota Park later this week.
