"Admitting that he was a difficult kid to coach and be around early in his career". He was still difficult to coach as early as last year! Where is his apology to Maguire please?

It doesn't matter anyway. He's gonna be one of those players that drift in and out of first grade but never cement a spot. That's punishment enough for him. He should of actually stayed away from the game if he was seriously suffering depression not show up at a new team every season.

Is that your medical opinion for someone suffering depression? If Alex McKinnon was serious about being disabled he wouldn't piss about in a wheel chair.

How do you know he hasn't had one?

Nice try anyway.

???? You're argument is ridiculous. Alex mcinnon needs to be in a wheel chair. Chris Grevsmuhl does not need to be on the footy field? That makes no sense? If you're suffering depression why would you continue to play footy? Your obviously not gonna be in the right mind frame to play and you're not only destroying your reputation as a player but you're letting your team mates down at the same time. This has nothing to do with me being a medical professional it's more experience around footy players who have suffered depression?

Good one though mate! Can't wait for your next insightful post.

He needs to carry on with his life and not let his illness take control of it that's what he needs.
Not being funny but you obviously haven't got a clue about mental health issues. It's sad that in 2017 people still hold the opinions you and Sara do.

im pretty sure you dont have a clue about mental illness. if you have depression the last thing you want to do is put way more pressure on yourself week in week out. My best friend ended up killing himself because people were putting so much pressure on him to make the nrl and perform especially his parents. you dont understand how difficult it was for him to keep performing when all that was in his mind was "this is the only thing youre good at". you need to fix yourself before you go back into rugby league if you really have a mental illness. Thanks though doctor pommy.

Didn't Grevs come through a cowboys system that lost a few young guys to suicide? I'm sure there's at least 2 guys from around grevsmuhls age group that committed suicide. When that happened there was a huge talk about young guys not handling the pressure of professional football ( helped on by the rise of the NYC and the publicity it brought), the culture of not speaking up because you don't want to be weak etc. Their was a big push for player's to talk up about their mental issues, yet when someone like Grevsmuhl does, and i don't think grevsmuhl has actually done anything wrong off the field like other players who have played the depression card, he gets criticized heavily

I love how people willingly share opinions on what he should do to recover from his mental illness because their friend went through it or in their own head it makes sense.

Its not very difficult to understand that people with mental illness should stay away from professional sport as it's an extremely toxic environment. People put you under all kinds of pressure to perform and if you don't have the right mindset then you're never gonna be able to perform to your best ability. Sport isn't all about physical capability anymore. You have to mentally strong in the current game because people are always gonna be shooting you down for everything. To continue playing the game with a mental illness is not a good idea. All it's gonna do is drag you down more. But okay, let the kid keep playing. It's his health.. I guess...

That's all very well but life has taken him down the path of being a pro league player. Do you think just arbitrarily saying he can't play is going to be good for his health?

Seriously I don't think you have the first clue. Mental health is a strange thing and no solution fits everyone. In an ideal world your right he wouldn't be in this position but the world isn't perfect.

You couldn't say anyone else with any other illness is to be excluded from professions mental health is no different.

Life doesn't take anyone down any path. You choose to do what you do. When I was younger I always wanted to be an NRL player I played Harold matts and SG ball up until I was 17 but then realised that playing footy is not a good career to pursue seeing what it did to all my friends around me so I dropped my scholarship and studied.

What grevsmuhl is doing to himself by continuing to play is setting himself up for failure. I'm not saying he should stay away from the game forever but if he was serious about having mental health issues and also serious about fixing them then he should be taking a break from footy and going to a clinic for rehab.

In addition, professional sport is different from most professions mainly because if you don't make it you're basically f**ked. Other professions you usually study for and can always go into something else. The mental stability you need to be an NRL player is incredible. Why do you think that there's so many players that take steroids to recover from injuries faster? Because playing NRL is what keeps them off the streets. Most of these players have absolutely no back up at all so the pressure is ridiculous. Top that up with mental illness and you can't cope with it. I'm sorry but I just can't see how you could.

I think we're going to have to disagree. You have your opinions, where I have been told by medical professionals that if you manage your illness correctly it isn't a barrier to achieving anything.

Fair enough. Grevsmuhl's footy will do the talking to be honest. If he can pull through then he's one strong individual.
