Chris Judd Feeding Frenzy

Well, another AFL season is petering-out, which gives the green light for version 3 of the annual event that is - THE CHRIS JUDD FEEDING FRENZY!

Sure he's contracted to West Coast until the end of 2005, but that doesn't stop the grapevine from hitting overdrive with all manner of cock and bull rumour about him being lured back to Victoria at the cost of a club's entire social club and bank savings.

Am I the only AFL fan in the country who isn't creaming himself over the possibility of getting Judd onto my team's playing list?!

He's no dudd, but without a doubt he is the most overrated player in VFL/AFL history. Again, I reiterate, he is a fine footballer, but the public hysteria he is gleaning is way above and beyond what players like Voss and Carey received in their prime, and he's not within a cold cooee of that sort of ability.

Thankfully this ludicrous Hay + Williams + Pick 1 trade being mooted yesterday was nothing more than the usual Herald Sun balderdash, as the last thing Hawthorn needs at this delicate stage is to get themselves in a bullshit bank busting bidding war for the services of a solitary, overrated player whose bigger than Jesus image is yet to be matched in onfield exploits.

You'd swear Kevin Sheedy was stage managing the young bloke... Its the AFL equivalent of Beatlemania!!!

Its coco-bananas!

I'd gladly give my club's entire social club and bank savings for someone, nay anyone, who can kick straight inside 50 more than twice in a row. Hell I'll give half of said fortune for a player who can do it once a quarter... :(

Congrats to him, but my point about Judd being overrated has scarcely been more valid.

Some players get marked harder than others, and the media hysteria surrounding Judd ensures that he gets marked easier than most.

Riewoldt's effort to average a dozen marks a game, whilst kicking almost 70 goals in the toughest position on the field was truly phenomenal, and in real terms was the best individual player performance of 2004.

Simon Black, Nigel Lappin & Cameron Ling were well ahead of Judd on weight of centre performances, and Riccuitto effectively squared him away despite being past his best and playing in a dismal side.

James Hird didn't come a long way under Judd stats-wise, despite being on the wrong side of 30 and playing injured more often than not, and 1 of his possessions is worth 2 of Judds.

Even Luke Ball practically squares Judd away (a few less kicks, a few more handballs, one-third more tackles and almost twice as many marks), but media hysteria means that he's probably worth about half as much on the market, despite having more developmental potential.

There's certainly been worse winners than Judd (Brian Wilson, Robert Dipierdomenico, Tony Liberatore, etc), but there's no doubt that Judd has achieved the unthinkable, and became an even bigger media glory case than Tim Watson was...
