Chris Lawrence: I'm The Fittest I've Been In 3 Years

YOU can’t accuse Tigers centre Chris Lawrence of not being a team player.

Lawrence would be the first to admit his past three seasons haven’t been his best, but as it turns out the former Test centre has a very legitimate excuse for his patchy form.

Widespread injuries throughout the Tigers’ ranks have forced the 26-year-old to spend the past three seasons playing busted.

After bursting onto the scene as a 17-year-old in 2006, great things were expected of the St Gregory’s alumnus, particularly after making his Test debut at 21. However, after recovering from potentially career-ending hip injury in 2011, Lawrence’s rep career has failed to kick on, thanks mainly to a troublesome ankle.

“It’s been very frustrating but you’ve got to put the team first,” Lawrence tells RLW.

“(Over the past three years) I’ve been coming off a couple of big injuries and then having to play through those injuries because we’ve had no one else.

“At the start of 2012, I came through and that was probably the last time I was fully fit. At the back end of that year I got an ankle injury and I re-did it at the start of 2013.

“I had major surgery at the end of the year and only came back just before round one last year. In the middle of the year it felt like I was getting over it but then I had a slight re-occurrence.

“(But) we were getting to the point where we playing two back-rowers on the wing, and as senior player in the team, if I could run and I could move my legs I had to be out there.”

It’s been a long road, however, in the lead up to the 2015 season, Lawerence tells RLW that his ankle is fully recovered and that he had his best pre-season in almost three years.

“I’ve been pretty much able to do everything this pre-season, which is probably the first time in about three years I’ve been able to do all the running,” he says.

“I’m under no illusions. The body’s not going to go back to where it was five or six years ago but I’ve been able to do this pre-season injury free and I really feel like I’m in the best shape I’ve been in for years.”

It may go some length to explain his abysmal form in previous years.

However it puts the pressure on him to outperform his last 3 years consistently every week, because now he has no excuses not to.

If he doesn't have a bumper year this year, then sorry Rowdy, you either become a back rower or you find a new home

Thanks Madunit. I have been wondering where Lawrence is at with his training. Sounds like he is fit and I hope that equates to fast. We really have been missing his attack the past few years.....

Here's hoping he has a top season.

I don't mind if he hasn't gained any straight line speed.

It's his lateral speed that was abysmal.

Obviously the ankle injury contributed to that. If he can be laterally quick like he used to be, he'll be immensely better.

Just as a quick aside, I notice Keith Lulia is training with the team again. I thought he broke his neck. I couldn't see him on the long term sick list so I am guessing he is right to play. Anyone have any info on his injury?

really want to believe this but you could change the year that story was published and it would fit for the past three seasons.

I hope he does comes back and contributes to the team but I'm pessimistic about it.

Wonder if the ankle contributed to him running over the sideline numerous times, and his inability to catch the ball without a net...

You would think he would leave his talking for on the field given the last couple of years he has had..

He was fully training with the squad at the open session on Tuesday. No strapping and moving 100%

Seemed to be at right center in the secondary team with chance peni outside him

Yep, I was going to say I've read the same article at the start of the last two seasons. Might have even posted it myself last year. It's like the "Carl Webb has lost weight and is training the house down" perennial. Or the "Adam Blair wants to be a leader for the young fellas this year" story.

His lateral shift and ability to turn and chase still really worry me.

Wish him the best but really will believe it when I see it

His lateral movement was so bad that he even stopped moving up with the defensive line, as he believed it gave him a better chance of making a tackle and preventing a try.

But all it did was drag our winger in field to cover the gap he created in the defensive line which then left Lawrence as a cover defender on a winger and he never had the speed to do that.

All centres do this if they are slow lateral movers, or if the half on their inside is a crap defender.

Im sure cutting out all that gluten shit will see him running like a 20 year old again . Running all over Sydney trying to find a meal without gluten will make him and the boys fitter and trimmer than ever ;)

Can't see him improving. Gluten or No Gluten, I expect pretty much more of the same from Lawrence this year.

I want to see Lawrence kill it in the Aukland 9s. If he does then we know that this is not just another excuses article and he once again is the real deal. All the best buddy.

Sounds like one of Benji's weekly articles about what he is going to do next week. Unfortunately next week there will be a fresh excuse why it will not happen until the following week. Walk the walk, drop the propaganda.

I was just reading an article online that has a list of players that are off contract after this season and Chris Lawrence isn't on that list. I thought this was his last contracted year with his current contract. Are we really still going to be stuck giving this guy a huge chunk of our salary cap next season as well ? Can anyone confirm ?
