Also their latest update via radio

"Fiji NSW Cup Bid Co-coordinator Petero Civoniceva's interview with ABC . As the PNG Hunters continue to go from strength to strength in the Queensland Rugby League Cup, a decision on the Fijian bid to enter a similar team in the New South Wales Cup next year could be imminent.

Progress stalled somewhat while the changing of the guard at the top of the NRL was completed.

But former Broncos, Kangaroos and Fiji Bati star, Petero Civoniceva, who's leading the push, says there's growing excitement in the Fiji camp that the news they've been waiting for may not be far away now.

Still no news. They have been working on this for over two years, why is it so hard to get done?

This is peak rugby league isnt it?

Why the F&^$ has this dragged on for so very painfully long?

This has gone on for 3 years of i dotting and t crossing and double questioning and looking for reasons why it wont work...

Meanwhile on the other hand national news yesterday was unions confirmation of funding for a Fijian team. They just decided to do it and did it.

As a sport we are so scared of change its unbelievable.

NSW Cup is umm.. a very prestigious comp and we umm.. have to look after the heartlands before we consider risky expansion moves. Umm try again in 5 years

Looks like we will have to wait another year. Rugby league just can't seem to take a step forward and jump in the deep end.

Fiji Nears Intrust Super Premiership NSW Inclusion

FIJI PRIDE: While the Bati have played two Tests this year, Fiji also drew significant support at the 2016 Harmony Cup.

Fiji's bid to have a side in the NSW Intrust Super Premiership has received a huge boost after New South Wales Rugby League CEO David Trodden confirmed that the NSWRL were "very committed" to making their dreams a reality.

However, he conceded it would be unlikely for them join the 12-team Intrust Super Premiership in 2017 due to ongoing commercial considerations.

The Fiji NSW Cup Bid Twitter handle has over 12,000 followers and has regularly promoted the ever-growing relationship between the Pacific nation and rugby league.

Trodden said the NSWRL had also received an expression of interest from the South Island of New Zealand to join the Intrust Super Premiership, but it appears Fiji is the front-runner to be the next expansion side as part of a revamped second-tier pathway program.

In welcome news, NRL Head of Football Brian Canavan announced on Thursday a plan to increase the number of teams in the ISP from 12 to 16 in 2022, with Fiji mentioned as one of the proposed newcomers.

"They would be a wonderful addition to our competition," Trodden said when asked about the Fijian bid.

"We have been working with Fiji for about two years now, but working through the commercial considerations of the whole involvement has taken us a bit longer than what we anticipated.

"We were hopeful that they might have been in the competition next year, but I think that's appearing less likely now than we had hoped.

"But certainly we're talking to Brian regularly about making sure that that happens in 2018 when this whole thing is ready to be launched."

Fiji's bid has drawn comparisons to Papua New Guinea's inclusion in the Queensland Intrust Super Cup.

The Hunters joined the competition in 2014 and took just one year to announce themselves as competition heavyweights after going on a 17-game winning streak to finish just one point behind minor premiers the Townsville Blackhawks.

Their inclusion has had a profound impact on the rugby league-mad nation, with their home games played in front of huge crowds at the recently-refurbished National Football Stadium in Port Moresby.

The national side has also reaped the benefit of having a State Cup side, and were victorious over Fiji earlier this year with a stirring 24-22 win during Rep Round.

Trodden said the NSWRL and Fijian bid team had based their funding model on the one used by the Hunters, and hoped it would achieve similar results if and when they joined the ISP.

"That's an important discussion because the funding consideration we've been having with them is that they've been self-funding their participation in the competition," he said.

"The model that we've been working on is the model that PNG have with the participation in the Queensland competition the Intrust Super Cup, and that's a self-funded model, and that's the model we've been working with at the moment."

How long have they had to go over "commercial considerations"? This bid didn't pop up yesterday.

OK, I get everyones frustration, but if the bids not ready, its not ready, and it looks like everything is working towards 2018, which kind of aligns with the new restructure anyway. I don't see any need to get worked up over a fiji team in the national rugby comp either, fmd that is even shitter than super rugby, its not like its a pathway anywhere for fijian players... don't their best already play in Europe, or in their 7s team. Just another part of a pissing contest that will blow back on union imo.

Apparently the NRLis concerned the existing NSW cup clubs are not sustainable enough and wont consider expansion until every club is rolling in cash....... but they will look at it in some point in the future.

Typical NRL, Union will be up and running and attracting the best Jnrs long time before we ever see a RL in NSW cup club there.

Mate, if you think the NRC side is your biggest threat regarding juniors then you're massively mistaken. There are half a dozen French Rugby clubs with scouts on the Islands searching for talent. Seriously, their are talent managers in France that can list you the best 15 year olds on the Islands. A few are even providing these kids with French lessons.

And as we have seen in the west if there arent strong pathways that give kids hope of masking a Professional career in league then they will chose union every time as that is where the opportunities and pathways lie. As a parent you can't blame them for seeing union as a better option for thier talented fifteen year old over league. At least a second tier club supported by the NRL and its clubs would have started that genuine league option.

One day, just not today should be the NRL.s logo when it comes to growing rugby league.
