Classic Mafia II: Cosa Nostra

Several months had passed since the Sicilian Mafia's ill-fated rise to power in the Italian city of Palermo. Word of this success had inevitably spread to their brothers in the Americas, some of whom had only very recently migrated into the country. Those who had migrated to America early, prior to or during the mafia's ascendancy, were uninterested by these whisperings, instead still determined to make new, honest lives for themselves like they had set out to do. Many of the recent immigrants, too, had left Italy for this same reason and were in no hurry to forgo their plans. A select few, however, had different plans...

It was a cool, breezy Sunday afternoon in lower Manhattan. The sun was out and to celebrate many families had gathered together for picnics in Battery Park. One such family found comfort underneath one of the largest trees in the park. The two young boys rolled around on the grass wrestling each other as their father relaxed back in the shade. Their father, a hardened army veteran, always encouraged them to rough each other up. Their mother, on the other hand, expressed that look of concern only a mother can perfect. "Be careful boys!" she pleaded.

The father laughed, taking out the radio and turning it on so he could listen for the latest sports news. "For those of you who have just joined us, we have some breaking news. A man's body has just been found in an alleyway in Battery Park City and initial reports suggest that the death is being treated as highly suspicious. One of New York's senators has called for immediate action; 'Minor assaults are one thing, but murder is the most heinous of crimes and it's something the city of New York will not stand for. We must do everything we can to find those responsible, serve them justice, and keep this community safe'. Petty thefts have also been on the ri-...". The mother had turned the radio off and thrown it into the bag as she hastily began to pack everything up. "That's it we're going home!" she screeched. "Come on, put your shoes back on, we're getting out of here right now!".

As the children were being ushered out of the park by their over-bearing mother, an odd looking man ran desperately towards them shouting "They're coming to get us! I knew it, they're here! Oh my god THEY'RE HERE!". His hair was frazzled, his eyes were bloodshot and he smelt of garlic. "Get away from my children you freak!" the mother cried as she slapped the crazed man's face, dragging her kids to the car and trying to start the engine from the passenger seat. "And you think I'm paranoid!" she glared at her husband, who sighed.

Several hours later, when the sun had well and truly set, three men in suits walked the streets, hands in pockets. The man on the left was mostly unremarkable person, with only a scar across his face distinguishing him from other men. The man on the right, however, was a large beefy individual, who looked like he could crush you with his bare hands. Of most interest, though, was the man who walked in between these two gentleman. He was a rather short and stocky man, sporting a full-brim hat and wearing a vest underneath his suit, a style he had adopted in his younger years.

The men entered the local tavern, nodded to the barkeeper, and headed upstairs. As they walked along the narrow hallway, the man in the vest whistled quietly, until they reached the final room on the right. In there, sat a single wooden chair, holding a young man gagged and bounded. Tears ran down his face as the three men came into his view. "You should have known not to mess with us, with... this thing of ours" one remarked calmly, and just like that, they shot him dead.

The American Mafia had formed.
