2009 Contracted Players
Lazarus, Ayshford, Dunley, Tagive, Collis, Marshall, Farah, Morris, Payten, Payne, Halatau, Trimarchi, Galea (13 players) (plus a as yet unknown, unsigned prop forward)

2010 Contracted players
McDonnell, Ryan, Tuiaki, Lawrence, Moltzen, Gibbs, Laurie, Galloway, Fulton, Heighington, Ellis (all signed to 2010 season or beyond) (11 players)

Of the 2009 players I’d say we have lost Marshall and Farah and I suspect Payten will go to ESL to see out his career (as he wanted to do in 2009). Payne, Trimarchi and Galea are on borrowed time and have to go. Halatau will probably be tapped on shoulder (only because his contract is up and WT can no longer afford to have 2 small back rowers – and unfortunately for him Fulton is contracted till end of 2010- I’d rather retain Halatau for his versatility but unless Fulton wants to go, it has to be Halatau). I hope Morris moves on, but if he stays and is re-signed for his utility value, it would have to be at a reduced value contract- maybe his expectations are less now due to a failed “fishing expedition” this year for fresh fields. You never know if Farah goes as it looks quite possible, we may have to retain Morris. Collis and Tagive would have to be told their performance this year will decide their retention or not and they are open to test the market. Lazarus, Ayshford and Dunley’s performance at the NRL standard is unknown and we will keenly await their on field performance.

So we may have about 15- 16 players for 2010 from our own ranks- that leaves 10 players needed. Plus we will also need a coach, assistant coach and recruitment manager- surely Teflon Tim, Simmons and McDonnell cannot survive the upcoming 2009 debacle and the need for a clean out.

I hope the threat of upcoming contract renewal spurs the players in question to rise to the occassion but they have not done so yet in the past years.

Ironic isn't it- those with longer term contracts eg Fulton, McDonnell and Gibbs have become questionable as to their worth and continued value and we look like loosing Payten and Halatau because their contracts are expiring and the WT are looking for fresh blood. I'm assuming Farah and Marshall are gone.

Let's see... We have a 100% success rate in finals football. We are the only club to win a premiership and then fail to make the finals for the next three years. Soon we will be the only club to completely clean out the playing ranks within five years of winning the prize... Will we have any of our '05 premiers left on the books by the beginning of season '10? Is Sheens making a play for another record breaking year - his last at the helm of Wests Tigers?

The 05 premiership players ranks are thinning- 2010 may see only Gibbs, Fulton and Heighington. I hope Halatau can be retained, but then again it may be at the expense of Fulton. Possibly Payten could also stay if offered a reasonable extension. But yes, at worst maybe 3 left, best, maybe 4 or 5.

Well there you go... We're not the only club to totally choke after a season of success! (Although I note those other examples are pre-NRL, if that were to matter).

Still, not a good look if we've lost an entire team in the space of 5 or 6 years.

A quick point, if Farah goes I think the club would want to hold onto Halatau. Someone needs to play hooker...

I agree with Halatau staying, I prefer him to Fulton but I suppose how things end up may depend soley on the sequence of decisions made by the players in negotiation and the club itself in making offers to new blood.

Players like Halatau, Fulton and Gibbs needs to get stronger in the off season and play alot harder in 2009. Too often they look like pillows when running the ball.

Fulton isn't a farkin battering ram.

He's probably the closest thing we have to a second half in the club.

halatau is not and will never be a hooker! just because someone can scoot 15 meters from a quick 4th tackle play the ball doesnt make them a hooker. he gives terrible service, has no kicking game and no vision. watch how it holds the team back when he has stints there. nz worked this out, now its sheens turn.

I think a clean-out will occur once Sheens and his group are let go, hopefully at the same time. Until than pray something good happens.
