Panthers target: Ivan Cleary. Picture: New Zealand Herald

IVAN Cleary has bolted to the top of Penrith's coaching wishlist for 2012, with Ricky Stuart and Steve Georgallis now out of the frame.

Growing whispers from the foot of the mountains have been echoing Cleary's name all week, despite the fact he's still contracted to the Warriors next season.

Who Penrith decide to chase is entirely at the discretion of new football manager Phil Gould, and it just so happens he and Cleary share a tight bond from their time together at the Roosters more than a decade ago.

Those familiar with Gould's thoughts on the next Penrith coach have told us that an experienced campaigner is being sought. Gould has privately acknowledged the cash-strapped Panthers are facing a lengthy re-building period that may not deliver immediate success and that a rookie coach needs to build his reputation.

Cleary has been at the helm of the Warriors since 2006, leading the Kiwi outfit to three finals berths in five seasons. His position has been subject to conjecture at various stages, but with New Zealand on target for another September tilt this season, Cleary has the credentials for the job.

Sources close to the Panthers have confirmed Cleary's name had been mentioned among management, although Gould played a straighter bat than Geoff Boycott when we contacted him via text yesterday.

"I won't be making any comment about the coaching position at Penrith until I have a coach," Gould texted back. "We have a coach in place for 2011 in Matt Elliott so I have plenty of time to find our club the best coaching structure for the future. I won't be rushing into that process."

The Warriors would have to agree to release Cleary for the deal to eventuate, but club CEO Wayne Scurrah did not return our call to discuss his thoughts.

Another club insider told us Stuart was no longer a chance, while Georgallis is considered too green for what shapes as a tough job initially. It's understood St Helens coach Mick Potter, who began his coaching career with Penrith's junior reps, is a more realistic back-up option should the Cleary plan fall through.

Des Hasler's name has also been lurking in the mix because he is still yet to take up a one-year option at Manly, which expires on 30 June. The club has offered Hasler a handsome two-year extension, which would make him the first man to coach the Silvertails for 10 consecutive seasons.

Although both parties are still quibbling over dollars and bonuses, we simply can't see Hasler going anywhere.

Obviously take this article with a pinch of salt as it is in the Telecrap, as they say themselves he is contracted to us for 2012.

I think we all know that contracts aren't worth a pinch of shit these days.
I actually think this might have legs. Gus has always rated Ivan and the are quite close.

I don't think this will derail our season if it happens, such is the utter professional approach Ivan takes.

Looking ahead if it did happen..... Bluey maybe or would they promote Iro??

Im not sure the Panfers gig is well suited to Ivan. Here he is his own man and own coach where at penriff he will be a yes man to Gus who will pull alll the strings and tell him what to do who to coach and what plans to use.

Cant see it as a career move and can only see Ivan going if he gets a 3-4 year deal on good $$$ otherwise he seems preety well set here with the roster he has

I think you're right, but all the reports seem to say Penrith don't have the $$$ to splash around - I reckon Ivan will still be here next year.

They texted Gould. That shows the level of professionalism of DT journalists.

Nope, I don't see this happening. Contracted until 2012, and to me Ivan seems like the sort of person who would not consider breaking a contract.

Plus who would you want to work with, the Warriors squad or the Panthers?

And as someone said, he'd be a puppet for Gould.

Warriors tell Phil Gould: get paws off Ivan Cleary

THE Warriors have attempted to hose down Penrith's bid to poach coach Ivan Cleary by maintaining that he is contracted across the Tasman until the end of next season.

But The Sunday Telegraph can reveal Penrith's general manager of football Phil Gould has had a number of conversations with Cleary about joining the Panthers next season.

Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah insists Cleary has made no approach to seek an early release and the coach maintains he will see out his current deal.

But The Sunday Telegraph has been told that Cleary is interested in the challenge of overhauling the structure of football at the foot of the mountains - at the appropriate time.

"Ivan's fully contracted through until the end of next year and he's certainly not asked for a release from anything," Scurrah said.

"He's happy here and we're happy with him. I haven't spoken to anyone at Penrith and he's fully on contract with the Warriors.

"He'll be here for the next season at least."

Pressed on whether the Warriors would entertain granting Cleary an early release from the final year of his contract, Scurrah said: "I don't want to speculate on anything like that because it's not happened and we're not expecting it to happen."

Meanwhile, Gould confirmed speaking to a number of people at all levels of rugby league as part of his search for a new coach.

"I will talk more about the coaching at Penrith when I have a coach," Gould said.

"At this time I'm collecting a lot of information from many coaches at all levels, getting a feel for the style of coaching structure that would best serve the Panthers.

"That process is ongoing.

"I won't be rushed.

"The Panthers have a coach for 2011 and there's still half a season to go.

"I need to support our current coaches and the player group, and I am in no hurry to finalise a coaching structure beyond then until I have it right."

Cleary has coached the Warriors for the past six seasons, guiding them to three finals series and is on target for a fourth appearance this year.

The ex-NRL player, who played 53 times for the Warriors, also has a strong connection with Gould from his playing days at the Roosters.

When contacted by The Sunday Telegraph, the Warriors coach said: "I am contracted here until the end of 2012. I am looking forward to fulfilling that contract.

"As far as I am concerned, that is the end of the story."

The Sunday Telegraph has been told Gould may even entertain a return to the coaching ranks if he is unable to find what he deems a suitable candidate.

Bulldogs assistant coach Jim Dymock is another contender for the Penrith job.

If Clearly was to seek a release from the Warriors, assistant coach Tony Iro would be the favourite to replace him.

Not surprised, for the past few years Gus seems to get a little wet when talking about Cleary. A sneaky one was put into the commentary yesterday RE the Warriors' salary cap.

I see this as a win/win tbh. Happy for Cleary to stay and continue for now, but if he goes we get a choice between most likely Tony Iro and Bluey? Nice. Let's put it this way, my happiness is not conditional on Ivan Cleary staying.

If Bluey was to come in after Ivan the Warriors dream of a premiership may be much more
likely by then - the future looks real good with all the new young guns like Fisiahi Johnson
and Taylor coming through the system. 2013-2015 could be some great Warriors years ahead!! Bluey is an amazing coach that could win the thing with all this kiwi talent

It'd be sad in a way... the other day I was watching a video on the 2002 season, it showed the blokes leaving taking their kids around the ground. You could see Campo and Cleary had a genuine fondness to the joint and the fans.

It'd be an end to an era. One that I don't think we should discount given the transformation in the club IMO now getting to the point good junior identification and pathways into first grade. In that respect, if he was to go he leaves a fresh new era for another coach to really exploit.

CGW don't have any special sources other than what you read on here. They are geniuss that regurgitate week old internet rumours and try and pass themselves off as League experts when they blatently know nothing about the game.
