Cleary. Should he remain as coach?

Should Ivan remain as coach?

  • Yes. He's a good coach - the present problems are the players fault.

From the best start to a season ever to this. The team are badly conditioned, poorly selected and don't appear to know what is going on.
Our attack is pathetic. Is Ivan the man to take us forward?

The answer is yes. I was reading an article just before from last year about his level temperament and his attention to detail. I think they're attributes that suit his current role.

I think 2009 can only be looked at as a year for the coach to learn. I don't know firstly how much the Sonny Fai incident has affected the team. I would say he probably already noted the halfback crisis, given they practically went through every half with two legs whose played in the southern hemisphere in the last 10 years all of which turned him down. I'm not willing to write 2010 off, I don't think the adjustments have to be major, probably a slighlty differently structured off season working on stamina, ball skills and a bit of offensive structure.

I'd like to see him have an extra assistant on the defensive side of the ledger, I'm not sure what Campion's up to these days but he'd be the first bloke I'd ask, if not, Ruben Wiki holds a lot of mana with the boys and his defence even at the end was very strong. It'd free Ivan to look more at the offence. I would suggest he's come through a system at the Roosters that focused very much on the basics of completing sets and moving forward hard in defence, but I sense Ivan will evolve beyond that.

Ultimately, he has my full support, I wish he'd do away with the kick for penalty routine and I'd wish he'd make a couple more changes, but more often than not I guess he's stayed fairly true to a lot of players like Hohaia, Vatuvei, when they've gone through ruts and they've come out of it as stronger people.

100% Yes. I think Ivan deserves the chance to turn things round in 2010. He has taken the Warriors to the playoffs twice, and would have in 2006 as well had we not been deducted points. If the team fails to fire in 2010 then I think he will be under a great deal of pressure.

I agree with much of what you say.

Bar the bit about of leaving ivan with attack bit. Cleary was an average player at best and did not have a strong attacking game at all IMO.

There attack has been awful this year. AWFUL. It was actually pretty bad last year - something they recognised by getting rid of rovelli, witt, fien who stifled attack.

So he has a relatively clean slate - yet does nothing to build on their attack. It has been crap all year.

Centre standing flat - second rowers stationery or running crap line.

It's often said that the most difficult part of coaching is man management. He's probably had the hardest start a coach could ask for, taking over a terribly underperforming team, dealing with the salary cap issues and of course trying to keep the team together through the Sonny Fai tragedy.

We've been playing very poorly, but the club doesn't appear to have fallen apart to the point where players and coaches are turning on each other. 2009 will be a write off, and hopefully Cleary has learnt from this year because he can't afford to get it wrong next year.

Perhaps my one concern is the way the players have apparently bulked up at the expense of skill and fitness. This concerns me quite a bit considering this was our downfall a very short time ago. I always worry when mistakes start getting repeated because it shows an inability to learn from past mistakes, which is a sure fire way to fail.

Sam Rapira is a good example. He said so himself that last year he slimmed down last year when they reduced interchange and it backfired, and this year he (like so many others) appear to have bulked up. What's wrong with playing at an ideal weight where players can get the best out of strength, speed and skills.

Cleary needs to find the right balance, and right now he hasn't got it. Having said that, he's proven he can bring a team together and overcome situations that would normally tear a team apart. That alone is a reason why he should be given every opportunity to make amends for this season.

Cleary, yes. John Hart, no! What does he know about league? How can he make a sound judgment about recruitment? He's a turncoat! I bet you when he was a fugby coach, he would've slated our game.

I'm in the maybe camp. He's done some great things at times, can't deny that. ATM things don't look good though, and some of the dumping of players from last year have been head scratchers. Some of the players put in some positions this year have been head scratchers. The start to the year was mentioned-how good it was-But then that winning team was changed and the rot set in.
I haven't lost complete faith in the guy, I think he's gone this far may as well carry on. But I'll be very interested to see what he does from here. Even if the games aren't entertaining, seeing the strategy is fascinating. I will be interested particularly to see if he gives some young guys a chance if the playoffs are gone.
As for Hart-I want to see EXACTLY what his role comprises of, how much say he has. Take him out of the loop and give Ives free rein and see what happens.

Pointless thread. He isn't going anywhere and this is the last place anyone should come for opinions on the game to help their club.

Hope you guys had fun over there Oz, despite a bit of a depressing trip for a Warriors pub crawl, with a few minutes of hope in each game
