Clubs dropping out of Premier League

No they don't.

They DID (up until 2002) state that they would exercise their right to enforce a clause in NRL contracts which stated "no NRL-contracted player will appear in another televised competition".

Early in 2002 they decided to waive that right.

As it stands, unless Ch 9 has changed their minds back again, the only thing stopping the broadcast of PL is the unwillingness of the NSWRL to get off their fat arses and approach the ABC again.

Perhaps a vigorous e-mail campaign to the NSWRL and the media might get something done.

Here's the NSWRL contact page:

This is what I sent:

Hello,

I would like to know if it is possible for NSW Premier League matches to be broadcast on ABC TV on Saturday afternoons?

This timeslot is a “League Free Zone” whereas children are being exposed to AFL and Union during the whole afternoon. Also, it would be great to see Premier League games.

Regards,

The NSWRL pushed for Jim Beam Cup to be televised - not PL. This defied logic and shows how the NSWRL have NFI when it comes to what the people want.

Thankfully it did not get off the ground.

Surely PL is better value. The tribalism and the names associated with the flagship NSWRL comp would resonate with the public more than a "packed" 150 people at Potts Park.

I suspect there may have been two reasons for that

1. JB definitely has no NRL-contracted players, so therefore they wouldn't have ahad to clear the telecasts with Ch 9.

2. The JB Cup convenor was the only energetic chap in there and obviously would want HIS baby to be the one that got a huge opportunity for increased exposure and sponsorship.

Can you blame them?

The way the NSWRL promotes PL it isn't worth it. If PL had TV coverage etc (which it deserves), you'd see more clubs sticking around instead of opting for feeders.

Couple that with the JBC clubs that are desparate to escape association with that competition and it becomes attractive.

& whos fault is that the ABCs theyd rather have club rugby

also sides that do have stand alone games can do more than what theyre doing to promote the games let every1 in for free have cheergirls have cheap beer

Tigerman, you are a goose! If I can make out what you are saying is correct, you are saying that clubs like Newtown, Norths, St Mary's/Penrith, Balmain and Wests do nothing when it comes to promoting standalone PL games? Living in the inner west and thus being in the Balmain and Newtown districts I see that Newtown actively promote their games and they get rewarded with good crowds. Balmain do sweet FA to promote their games and as a result they get sweet FA to their games. It's almost as though Balmain have given up promoting themselves as the Balmain Tigers and aiming to get some of the non Wests Tigers fans back. It seems that Newtown have taken up that and look at how many people go to watch the Jets play. As a result, the Jets are going from strength to strength and Balmain are dieing quicker than the Dodo.

It costs money to hold a game and so letting people in for Free will do nothing for the survival of these clubs. It costs less than $10 to go to a stand alone game anyway and most do not charge kids which makes it even more affordable. The clubs need to push their own barrow in the community to show people they do exist.

sadly this is very true

the worst of it is that Balmain do have the potential to get decent sized crowds to our games if we did anything about it

we had just under a thousand against saints (forget if it was early this year or late last year) with no promotion at all - if they even tried to market the games in the local area we'd do a lot better than we do

and $5 a match is hardly unreasonable for 2-3 games of footy!

I'd certainly agree with numer 2. An energetic chap he is.
