Good to see people using the Parramatta Eels wiki articles - they have been a, and are, an ongoing labour of love for a few online RL and Eels supporters over the last couple of years...

correct me if I'm wrong but looking at the list I would assume that Thornet, Hambly and Lynch were all captain/coach's ??? given the lack of success we had back then I'm surprised that the Colonel and Spencer O'Neill persisted with the concept.

Several Clubs of that era had captain/coaches...St George had a captain coach for each of its 11 premiership wins.
Thirsty Lynch in 1970 was the last of the player/coaches of the Parramatta team.

Thornett was, yes... Unsure of the others.

Vic Hey was also a Captain-Coach in the late 1940s.

I'm certain that Lynch was given he was still playing at 1970, I believed he moved to Penrith in 71.

Hambly, I'm not so sure I think he may moved to coach the side straight out of retirement but 67 was close to a playing year for "Grumpy" , so I'll have to check that up.

Yep, he was playing in 1967 as well as coaching... 36% winning record...

I'm sorry Pete but anyone could of coached that side to premiership victorys ;-) I don't think we had the playing talent to give the job to an important player in the side, i saw an interview on the eels DVD's where "Grumpy" clearly stated that it got too much for him, Thornett moved to the country a year or 2 to early and Lynch's form suffered and Parra weren't interested in signing him up beyond 1970.

I realise Ian Walsh wasn't a success at the club but I think we could of done with someone like him earlier in the piece to take the preasure of our important players...Hindsight is a wonderful thing I know. :)

Brian retired, as a player, after 11 games in the 1967 season but continued on as coach for the rest of the season.
Ron played 12 games in 1970, before being injured playing for Australia (as vice Captain) against the Poms.
