On the news this morning when talking about parras win it was said that if parra did not win either last night or next week against manly then b.s. would have been made a coaching director and a new 1st grade coach appointed. Did anyone else hear anything about this?

Last gasp Parramatta try gives Smith a lifeline

June 6, 2004

A DRAMATIC last-minute try by Parramatta centre Luke Burt last night may have saved Brian Smith's coaching role at the club.

The Eels ended a five-week period without a win in unbelievable fashion, with Burt swooping on an Adam Dykes grubber in the Knights in-goal to touch down with 36 seconds left in the match.

Moments later, five-eighth Michael Witt landed the pressure conversion after the siren to secure the two-point win.

Eels players embraced as if they had won a grand final.

The Knights, who just minutes earlier seemingly had the game in their keeping, were shattered.

But, in all the emotion, the man most relieved was coach Smith.

Under enormous pressure going into the game, The Sunday Telegraph has learned that Smith's job could have been on line.

Eels sources claim the Parramatta board had made the decision to intervene and move Smith sideways into a coaching director's role if he was unable to secure a win against either Newcastle last night or Manly next weekend.

An Eels board member yesterday did not want to be named but refused to deny the story, saying "all public statements must come through (CEO) Denis Fitzgerald".

The Eels' win will ease that pressure somewhat for now. How long depends on whether the side can build on the momentum a victory like last night's should generate.

Asked whether the pressure on his job would ease, Smith said: "I don't know. It depends what mood you guys are in and some of the other people out there."

Unless this win is the start of a long winning streak, I think they should pull the trigger and make the change.

Maybe it would have been better for the future of our club had we lost :?

I don't think so, the club, players and us fans all needed a win. However one win, or even a few more hopefully, won't change the long term situation as the problems are still there for all to see. The best that can come of a few more wins is that Smith is allowed to step aside with a little dignity and personally, I'd prefer that anyway.

Its a pretty POOR reflection on Parramatta fans that they are disappointed with such an exciting last minute win after all that has gone on.

Put your nooses away for just a minute and be happy for the boys who will get some excitment and encouragement out of the win.

Denis Fiztgerald was on the radio before saying that it was rubbish, and all the board members were behind Brian Smith.

I don't think Masters quoted Smith as saying he tendered his resignation, I think he said he merely spoke to officials and players and told them if they weren't happy with him then they should say so.

Sorry Scotty, I didn't see this when I posted my 'Phyrric Victory" thread. Anyway, on that one the Smith lovers reckon the SMH (where I heard the news) is full of shit and went on the 'your'e negative' bandwagon.

Crazy is right. ONe win, while a joy to behold, won't change the long term future of the club. Those who argue that Smith is now of the hook are forgetting that we are 1-6, and that 1 was a massive last minute stroke of fortune and luck, in a game where we were losing for the first 79 min 35 sec of the game. Now, unless Smithy's game plan went something like "Boys, don't worry about scoring until the 78th min. Ash, take an intercept and set up play. Adam, put in a grubber and Burty will swoop on it. Don't panic, you'll have 25 seconds before fulltime. And forget about the fact that if you lose, you will spend the rest of your life in reserve grade"

Yeah right!!!!

Strider, even in your euphoria, at least allow those who can see the big picture to discuss it. You see, we want Parra to win grand finals, not just flukey wins against the Knights lower graders!

Smithy as Coaching Director and Daniel Anderson as Coach sounds good to me.
Both good friends and Smithy deserves to kick back for a while and can control all the grades from there.

Sounds good to me.

Smithy would still be at the club, but out of the dressing room.

A nice compromise all round.

*sigh*

The curse of the selective memory strikes again:

* For a portion of the match we were actually WINNING 12 points to 10; we weren't behind the entire game

* The match which turned Penrith's season around last year was a desperate one point win over the Roosters

* Why is it that the 'Smith basher' and the 'Smith lovers' cannot get along?

"Thos who can see the big picture" - what the hell does that mean? Does that mean that if I and others support oue coach, our opinions are therefore less correct and we know less about footy ot wish less for the club?

NO - I simply believe that a positive culture is more benficial than a highly negative one.

AND whilst it was just ONE win, it was a win nevertheless.

I really don't think whether Brian's future would have changed or not should really have motivated your emotions about the win. That is pretty poor, IMO.

Let us not forget - some people (myself included) support Smith; others don't.

At the end of the day, we ALL want to see the Eels win and do well.

hey i like Brian too but lets face it - its a business and Brian aint getting it done for 3 years now....
Time to step aside and keeping him as coaching director is a wonderful idea.
He can maintain his credibility and the club might not have to pay him out!!!
