CRONULLA'S captain Brett Kimmorley could be forced out of the NRL, with the Dragons and Roosters yesterday saying they wouldn't sign the former Test half.
The 31-year-old's options are growing thin after the Sharks last week withdrew a $700,000 two-year deal. Sydney yesterday slammed the door on Kimmorley while the Dragons are poised to sign the Roosters' No. 7 Jamie Soward.
The Tigers could be Kimmorley's last option to stay in the NRL, with the club yesterday revealing they will meet with his manager George Mimis this week.
In a day of dramatic developments, the Dragons moved closer to securing Soward – but it is understood the club must offload winger Luke MacDougall to free up money to sign the playmaker.
Soward could be playing for the Dragons as soon as Friday night if a deal is struck.
Roosters CEO Brian Canavan said Sydney were prepared to release Soward but were not interested in Cronulla No. 7 Kimmorley.
"We have never been interested in Brett," Canavan said.
"I'm not sure where the supposed interest came from. We are very happy with the halves we have and won't be pursuing anyone else.
"We recently re-signed Mitchell Pearce and Braith Anasta is a State of Origin player."
Soward's manager Sam Ayoub last night said his client was "gutted" earlier in the year when he was dropped from the Roosters fulltime squad and was looking forward to linking up with the Dragons. "We have been in negotiation for the past three weeks," Ayoub said. "I know Nathan Brown is keen to get him there as soon as possible and I am hoping it will all be worked out in the next 48 hours."
The day of wheeling and dealing has seen Kimmorley's options decline. With two less clubs in the mix, the Tigers hold a commanding position on the eve of entering into negotiations with Kimmorley – if the former Origin half-back wants to stay in Sydney.
Tigers recruitment manager Warren McDonnell revealed last night he would be meeting with Mimis this week.
"We are interested in Brett," he said. "A lot of water still has to pass under the bridge but there is no denying we are interested."
