Comparing Melbourne to the 75 Roosters.....

The great 74/75 Roosters didn't concede a try in 2 grand finals. The Storm let in 4 tries last year and as for 2021 they're not in the GF yet. Whatever happens, the Roosters were the first in the NRL to win consecutive premierships.

1. Melbourne’s winning streak is being compared to the Easts 18 wins in a row so I thought it would be better to compare it to St.George’s unbeaten team which included every game of the year with one draw. Easts lost two early games to Cronulla and St.George and a major semi final loss to St.George. Before the grand final Graeme Langlands received a pain killing injection in his leg but it hit a nerve that wasn’t supposed to be there and he could only walk. Do you remember him taking a penalty kick that went a few feet causing a scrum feed to Easts? The Saints team mates as well as the team managers tried to persuade him to play the 2nd grade full back but he wouldn’t listen so the rest of the team gave up causing the 2nd half walkover.
5. The St.George team was stacked in an era you could get away with it.
So were Easts of 1975.
6. And they only won 18 regular season games, which I know was all there was.
Yes but they won them all but for one draw and won the grand final easily and the opposition full back wasn’t a passenger as Langlands was.
The statistics are misleading because of the changes in the rules of the games. How many people are turned off by the blowouts? That would be an interesting statistic.
7. I’m guessing they didn’t travel interstate or contend with a pandemic or see one of the game’s greatest players retire.
No the NSWRL did include may Queenslanders who came to play in the Sydney competition. That is why we have State of Origin. Grame Langlands was such a player but he played with an injury which meant he was a passenger like no other inthe history of the game.
8. As for the 1975 Roosters, they went back-to-back, how can they not be considered a great team?
We are discussing a team of one year. St.George went back-to-back too.
2. Doesn’t matter how many times the Dragons beat them, they didn’t beat them in the GF.
Yes it does. St.George were unbeaten and in 1975 St.George beat them twice and could have beaten them in the grand final without a full back who couldn’t use one leg but still took kicks for the line. Plenty of commentators like Greg Alexander say things like “Easts were great because they won 38 nil” but they ignore the facts that don’t fit in with their praise.
you can’t compare the amateur game League was back then with today’s.
3,It was a semi professional game back then. Players were paid but their main income came from jobs during the week. Rugby Union was the game for amateurs who could afford to live if they were injured. Look up how Rugby League in Australia started thanks to the efforts of Victor Trumper and J.J.Giltinan who helped Alec Burdon who was injured and couldn’t work.
4. They are a great club. Bellamy is a super coach. I hope that more Mexicans will take up the game but PVL, who thinks AF is boring, has said we won’t be taking RL to Perth or Adelaide.
5. Seriously, 1999 was with official help. The grand final referee had been chosen by the CEO from the days of Arthurson and Quayle. The referees are not an independent body.
6. To sell the game in Melbourne the second largest city in Australia. Rugby League is a small international game restricted to NSW & Qld, Yorkshire & Lancashire, NZ (Mainly Auckland) and a small part of France. Melbourne like St.George-Illawarra were a super club, made up from the former Super League teams of Perth, Adelaide and Hunter Mariners. Last century and before Melbourne was the home of AF with very little RL news. The Storm was RL’s attempt to break into that big market. The AFL grand final the day before was a rare boring blowout and the NRL wanted a close grand final to sell the game in Melbourne. The two super teams had met three times before with StG-Ill winning all games easily with a total score of 62-26. The half time score was 14-2 and it looked like another easy win for the Dragons. The second half was completely different with Melbourne making a comeback but the main difference was St.G-Ill were told to get off quickly and penalised whereas Melbourne were allowed to hold them down longer. That was the momentum shift that helped make it an exciting grand final for everyone as well as the target Victorian viewers.
7. You really think they set up an 80 minute game to have that ruling at the end ?
Not the ruling at the end but as I said above the game only had to be close and the 2nd half was completely different to the previous seven halves.
I have been through this before but rarely get arguments against but you are welcome to try.

Firstly the win streak is 19 games not 18. Also if we wanted comparisons, when a team can go three seasons with less then 4 draws and only 1 loss, whilst also winning the comp in all three years, which is what the Roosters did in 1935-36-37 then I'll be more impressed 😁 😜

Golden State Warriors 2016 (73 wins of 82 games) side beat the great Chicago Bulls 1996 (72 wins) team’s record for wins in a season. The GSW 2016 won’t be held in the same regard as the CB 1996 cause the GSW didn’t go on and win the championship like the bulls did.

So I think we probably need to hold judgement to see if the Storm can go on to win it back to back. That would be their mark of greatness especially if the unbeaten run remains.

Making comparisons to the great St George side of the 50’s-60’s is probably a apples and oranges debate. No salary cap, unlimited tackles and a real possession game where you could hold the ball for a whole half.

No doubt they are a great iconic side. No one can deny that. Unfortunately you can’t stack sides anymore cause you get titles taken away from you these days.

I have long wondered why the Sydney centric critics have been so harsh on the Storm when this club has given the NRL a truly national game which has in turn led to better income streams which help make the game they all earn their living from more financially sustainable. Almost biting the hand that feeds them. And then the Storm has been one of the clubs raising the whole competition to a new, higher level of professionalism, skill, fitness, player welfare, player development and more. All of this has benefited the game and all they want to do is criticise. They love raising the salary cap scandal time and again and whilst I’m not condoning that I think what is often lost is that Brian Waldron wasn’t head hunting other clubs’ proven talent (a la the Roosters method) he was trying to protect the young talent they had fostered themselves (Folau, Inglis, the big 3) who all joined the club as kids. My mates down in Melbourne are life long passionate AFL fans and they are members but the Storm has turned many of them into passionate NRL fans as well and all of the Melbournians now carry two membership cards in their wallets.

Win, lose of draw this year's premiership, Melbourne Storm are simply Australia’s best sporting club organisation

I think the new rules have eliminated upsets to a very large degree. This is why we're seeing record numbers of perfect rounds in tipping comps. This is the second year running we've had record and near-record winning streaks, and there have been streaks of 12 and 10 this year as well. The Panthers might have beaten last year's club record 17 straight had their team not been gutted by Origin. Back in '75 upsets were more the norm and this makes the Roosters better. They also bought a lot of elite players to assemble their team. Some things don't change.

In the past few years, every time they lost one of their “star players”, so called experts predicted them to struggle. However Bellamy & his support staff seem to possess the knack of signing lesser players from other clubs & they seamlessly learn their roles & soon become another cog in a well oiled Storm machine. I acknowledge that successful clubs have “the right cattle” however coaches such as Gibson, Bennett, Bellamy & Robinson gained respect from their players & duly put in a 100% effort (not 110% Tony) on match days.

They lost Hynes & Finucane for next year but have signed Nick Meaney and Bronson Garlick that can prove more than handy replacements.

Sadly I expect Meaney to go like Reimis Smith, much better at the Storm than the Dogs. One of our best the last couple of years but not had the pack or halves to let him play his best.

I’d love to see Bellamy coach another club and see if he could replicate his success.

Most of the best coaches have changed clubs several times and it’s a rare thing to do anywhere near as well at the new clubs and it would have been interesting to see if Bellamy would be an exception.

Whether others like them or not I think it’s hard to deny they are a well run outfit and I think every other club wants the Storm’s recipe for success. I think it’s like trying to cook KFC at home though. I can figure out most of the basic ingredients and try and replicate it but until I know those secret herbs and spices and the exact recipe it won’t end up the same.

This year has just be odd in general.

Roosters could miss the top 4 with 16 wins which has never happened before in the NRL era.

16 wins generally gets you 3rd or 2nd and a couple of times was good enough for 1st.

Setting Craig aside,
give any club the personnel of the Storm Staff List and success is on the way.

I would pay good money to spend a day in the Storm bunker, especially Bunn & Co.

I am dumfounded why this publication has not sent their best to do an in depth story
on the people named on the staff list.

Cannot compare them.
This Melbourne side is playing against fully professional teams.
The 75 Roosters played against brickies and garbo’s and pissheads
I don't know about the pissheads, but I'll bet the brickies and garbos hit a lot harder than a lot of the "athletes" who play today.
