There was nothing stopping Nine from simulcasting on Gem before. It has nothing to do with broadcasting laws.

Is "simulcasting" a loophole of sorts? A way to sneak in HD coverage by making a channel dedicated to HD television?

I don't pay any attention to this

That was more because Harvey Norman were pushing the latest fad of 3D TVs, from memory they broadcast Origin in 3D as well.

3D TV never took off because nobody wanted it in the first place.

Its great news. However its only in HD because 7 decided to show AFL in HD. They try to out do each other. Simulcast as always been a option but you know networks very selfish. At least all ch9 games next year will be HD from rd 1.

I wouldn't hold my breath on that, just because the law has changed doesn't mean that they'll change their channels to HD.

Australian TV is crazily hesitant to change, they're scared that a few people out there don't have HDTV or HD set top boxes so they won't necessarily change their channels over. IIRC only Ten are really interested in it.

Yes your right about that. There has been talk about having 9 in HD on a mpeg4 platform and still having a SD version but I don't know if it will happen. Can only hope there is more HD tv next year.

This is a bit off the topic, but something I've been wondering over the past few years is - Why are the Fox team calling Finals matches? Is there actually a live listening audience? Don't all viewers in Australia and overseas take the channel 9 feed? Are they simply calling the game for the benefit of those people watching the replay of the matches on Fox Sports? It would seem strange calling a match knowing there is nobody actually listening as you're calling it... They never used to do it, they would simply show replays with channel 9 commentary but they started dual calls about 4 or 5 years ago from memory...

IMO, it is sour grapes that they aren't able to call the finals live,. It's got nothing to do with the avoiding the cross-promotion Ch9 have with their other shows during the broadcast, because Fox used to replay the matches with Ch9 commentary until 2008, which was the first year Fox used their own commentary instead. Ch9 have been doing the cross-promotional adverts during broadcasts for more than a decade now.

I agree, it's useless using your own commentary when everyone is watching someone else's live broadcast and commentary.

To clarify - the government's ridiculous broadcast laws are why it hasn't been in HD til now.

For what it's worth, I think it's now locked in that GEM will broadcast the entire day in all states as a result of this announcement - plus Channel 9 doing the main game in all states.

Obviously then NSW, QLD, ACT and NT get the full day on Ch 9.

Um no , the law was (is ) the GF has to be shown on the main channel, it doesnt say it cant be simulcast on HD..

Ch 9 was taking the piss, knowing that a split audience might cost them 3,000 old women watching agatha christie..

they were happy to piss off 4 million people for a 0.01% gain in their ratings

No, the issue is actually fragmenting their RL audience across 2 channels. For example, if the Grand Final rates 1 million people, they prefer all 1 million to be counted against the 1 channel and not split say 800,000 on 9 and 20,000 on GEM as OZ Tam calculate their ratings based on the channel and not the program. This in turn effects what they can charge for advertising.

Nine/OzTAM will combine the Ch9/GEM audience when ratings are released tomorrow.
