Contract bungles

How often do top tier halves in their prime leave a club? This is once in a decade stuff that has happened twice in a week to them.

And worst of all, they lost 2 club legends that didn't want to leave because of this.

And their best players are their oldest. Lyon, Matai, B Stewart. All in the sunset of their careers.

You hit the nail on the head.

They got greedy. They could have saved a fair bit under the cap, but they got greedy. And it backfired. I can't believe they picked up Fatty Mateo, and can't believe they didn't just let Steve Matai go last year. Fatty's probably on 4-hundy, and Matai 2-fiddy, thats money they could have used on Foran and DCE. Dud moves.

Manly are f**ked with a capital F. They're much like Melbourne, relying on old players, no talented juniors in sight to rebuild with in time to keep up with the other teams and probably the worst managed salary cap in the competition.

The competition seems to be in a transition phase, where once mighty teams of the past 10 years are beginning to fade away, leaving a vacuum in their wake that needs to be filled. The question is by who.

Souffs, Penrith and the Rorters are already there. Everyone else seems to be struggling to join them.

DCE just told sterlo he was gonna sign with Manly in october then management changed and he was offered a lesser deal, pretty slick negotiating tactic.

Be careful, they'll have shitloads to spend now. At best they'll push the prices up for other clubs to retain their talent.

Melbourne still recruit some pretty darn good juniors. It will be interesting to see how they transition from the big three though.

Manly have a couple of guns in NYC! Their fullback and 5/8 are slick.

They need to ensure they retain them and surround them with experince, signing Mateo and Mason gives them about 6 really good games each per season, that's not what they needed this year

big hit!

basically.

watch them pick the eyes out of Souths again like they did 20-30yrs ago with Blake, Roberts, Carroll, etc.

Manly caught out by back ended contracts and previous bad management . Much like us having to let some of our higher paid players go like Jennings etc. Have people got short memories happens more frequently now .

We're richer than them for one. Our cap is as big as theirs. We lost Sam Burgess so we have room to move. And we have more contacts so more third party deals than they do.
