Converting mpg to avi

I have a 7.4 GB dvr-ms file which I converted to mpg (still 7.4 GB) without any loss of quality. Is there any program (or programs) out there that will convert this mpg file to avi and compress to a single-layer DVD size without any (or minimal) loss of quality?

Thanks.

the trouble is unless your dvd player is a newer one that works with divx files it won't play, you need to get hold of winavi http://www.winavi.com/ it will convert your file from .mpg to .vob dvd files then you can burn them onto a dvd and it should play in almost any dvd player if the new files add up to more than 4.5 GB then use dvd shrink http://www.dvdshrink.org/ to compress them down to a smaller size

p.s. my dvd player does play divx its so cool to burn a 350mb episode of the sarah connor chron......*ahem* instructional videos straight onto a cd-rw, throw it in and watch it immediately with no conversion whatsoever

VirtualDub MPEG version, and encode it with DIVX or XVID codec using two-pass at a high bitrate. Be warned though that if you go too high with the bit rate it won't play on some players.
