Not the flashiest of players but a lot of batsmen around today could learn a lot about concentration from him.

He has waned a bit in recent years but he one of my favourites to don the English cap.
Remarkable tour out here in 2010/11.
A tough century at the Perth during the 06 whitewash.
His obstinate 9 hour 176 against India in 2012 may not have won England the match but tons in the following 2 tests help set up England's amazing series win in India.
He was boring at times but at least he had a go.
Thanks for the memories Cooky.

Great player - accomplished in all conditions.

His record is hurt by having to open the batting in England for half his innings. Surely would average 50+ if he was Australian or Indian.

At his peak his average was just a whisker under 50. The last couple of years his game has just dropped off.

Great player, shame his last few years hurt his overall record.

But scored runs all over the world, good time for him to pull the plug.

At 33, this seems like a very English retirement that will have him reappear next year or even after that.

Probably the worst player to score over 5000 runs.

Needed to be a superhighway for him to hit the ball off the square.
