A Country Girl can measure up to the Coolmore

Canberra trainer Barbara Joseph has warned punters not to let A Country Girl get under their guards in Saturday’s feature race at Rosehill, the $600,000 G1 Coolmore Classic (1500m).
While Joseph concedes she is throwing the mare in at the “deep end” she is racing in career best form judging by her excellent win in the G3 Wiggle Quality 16 days ago.
”It’s a big step up but she deserves a crack at it,” Joseph said.
”If you’re not in it you can’t win it and she’s done everything right since she won the Wiggle, I couldn’t be happier with her.
A Country Girl has only contested one race in her career past 1400m and finished down the track over 1700m at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day but Joseph believes she is looking for more ground.
”I don’t think there is any question marks over her running the trip,” she said.
”I think she’s actually looking for the 1500m or even further this time in.
”When she ran in that Melbourne race she was at the end of her preparation and drew off the track so there was genuine excuses for her performance.”
In form hoop Zac Purton has elected to stick with A Country Girl and is wasting hard with her likely to be down near the minimum of 51kg.
”Zac has been really keen to stay with her and he’s told me he’ll get down,” she said.
”He’s been dieting for this for the last two weeks and he’s ridding very well at the moment.
”She loves Rosehill and her record is great there.
”Hopefully she can draw a good gate and I’m sure she’ll give a great sight.”
A total of 18 nominations were received for the race today with a maximum field of 16 to face the starter.
