Corner Posts

I'm sure this has been discussed before on this forum so apologies if so.

At first I agreed with the idea of keeping the corner posts but making them part of the field of play. Obviously they need to be there to help the touch judges.

Then a couple of weeks ago I watched as a ball trickled towards and bounced off a corner post to stay in-goal. If the posts were part of the field of play it would have been play on.

It got me thinking, why should these 4 minute points on the two touchlines have this (small and unlikely) protection from the ball going out?

Last night the Roosters kicked off and the ball hit the cross bar and bounced back into their hands (where it was knocked on). I think instead of a physical bar there should be a laser beam from one upright post to the other, why should this bar have this (small and unlikely) protection from the opposition catching the ball from the kickoff?

Well I thought Gus was in the 'get rid of the cornerpost' crowd. Seeing as I am questioning this, you draw your own conclusion :p

CORNERPOSTS will almost certainly be abolished in the NRL next season.
Australia had recommended the rule change to the Rugby League International Federation meeting in Melbourne this week.
But Britain has asked for more time to consider the alteration.
“So what we will probably do is use it as an experimental rule change in Australia next season,” ARL chief executive Geoff Carr tells RLW.
“The NRL is the main competition in Australia so that is where we will do it.”
Australia’s recommendation to the RLIF was the corner posts – or corner flags, which are used in Europe – would “no longer be included in the definition of the field of play”.
The concern is that a post or flag which was not standing up straight could cause a try to be disallowed that would otherwise have been completely legal.
Proponents of the change claim that the use of video replays have made the cornerpost obsolete.

Maybe Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker can referee with Obi Wan Kenobi and Yoda as touch judges.

Princess Leia can video ref.

keep the corner posts imo... i find that some of the best, most freakish and most athletic tries come from having the corner posts as an added obstacle to scoring. some of those reach-around-the-corner-post-while-my-whole-body-is-in-mid-air-over-the-touchline tries are awesome to see... and really give another skill for our elite to master to give them an advantage on the football field. i would be disappointed to see this removed... as it would make lesser finishers look better. the best finishers in our game can deal with the corner posts... and it's just another thing that sets them apart from the rest.

personally, i don't want that taken away.

just find a method to make them stand up straight, lol. it can't be that hard, surely.

Completely agree.

It just adds another dimension to the game, and IMO I don't see why the defence shouldn't be afforded a bit of an advantage by having them there. If you want to spread it wide to go over in the corner, you have to contend with that obstacle.

This whole nonsense that a try is going to be disallowed because of bent in corner post or the even more ridiculous notion that a defender will stop trying to tackle a player diving for the line and instead try and knock the corner post into him is just laughable.

It will bring up just as many contentious decisions at any rate by making them in the field of play with players legs collecting the post then trying to figure out if that leg is on the post (which is in) or touching the ground (which is out).

This is the sh*t Geoff Carr thinks of while the NSW Cup burns.

Can anyone say they didn't love seeing Dugan get the ball inside that post the other day? It's an art and it's a very exciting part of RL. I'll be very upset to see it go.

The rule changed a couple of years ago in RU, there's been few if any contentious decisions resulting.

I prefer corner posts. Gives some measure of protection to the defender, if the attacking player can dive out and stick the ball back in and avoid the corner post at the same time then they deserve their reward. With no defender on one side I don't think being able to dive out and stick the ball back in deserves as much reward and it'd be bordering on unfair having having to defend from that.

Just because we have video replays in the NRL and ESL doesn't mean we have them for all the other games of Rugby League played at various levels.

We still need corner posts in lower grade footy. It's silly to unnecessarily separate top-flight Rugby League from the rest of the game, especially when the reason for doing so is weak.

Why are they even tinkering with things like this? Some people in power have too much time on their hands.

I had the corner post from AAMI Park test match in my hand and was 1 meter from the gate when security caught me, it was well after the players leaving the field, and i was sooo close, that thing would have been my pride and joy on my bar.

I was threatened with a fine, but losing the post was punishment enough.

(ps i did get a big handfull of the new grass)

100% agree. Looks like another measure by the NRL to water down the game until it is just end to end try scoring.

Keep the corner posts fools

Agree with this too.

The amount of time dimwits like Voss have spent whining about corner posts is mind boggling. Does this small post actually affect their enjoyment of the game?
