Coughing up black sh*t after quitting

Rightio, Hi guys and gals,

Looking for some advice here, hopefully from some form of health professional.

I quit smoking dope (stupid decision to start, long story etc), and now i'm coughing up all manner of black sh*t.

Is this normal? It never happened when I actually WAS smoking, so why all of a sudden am i being punished like this for quitting? I was quite a heavy smoker, spun with Ciggies, but other than that, didn't smoke cigs/tobacco/whatever.

Anyone had similiar experiences? How long can I expect this to last for?

I occasionally use a hookah with flavoured tobacco now i've quit (occasionally as in, generally during the Knights games), is this gonna impede my recovery a great deal?

I'm 23, fit as a fiddle, no health complaints other than this.

A little disconcerting as you can imagine.

Yes, its normal to cough up tar after you stop. Should happen for up to a month or more depending on how heavy a smoker you were. The "blackness" will also decrease too and progressively turn to small amounts of black specs infused into the mucus you cough up or clear from your throat.

Sounds all pleasant and great, but quitting is the best thing you could do if you were a heavy bong smoker. Better out than in...

I love chop, but do take breaks -6 months usually.

The black stuff will last a few weeks depending how many cones per day you where having ie the more the longer it will last.

Your body is simply cleansing itself.

I've been off the smokes for one week now, using CHAMPIX, its been pretty good actually, no cravings at all. After smoking for nearly 15 years i think my body is in shock. I've been spitting up black, green, brown, and yellow sh*t every day with pieces of my lungs probably in that as well.

I think of it as my body just trying to de-tox itself.

I've been on the Champix now for 11.5 weeks so almost done. Only in the last week have I started coughing up lumpy black chunks and only in the morning.

BF, are you getting side effects from the Champix? I get nauseous after every single tablet for an hour or so and I'm thinking of chucking the last 6 down the toilet..... literally sick of the feelings...

When I stopped smoking full time, years ago, I coughed up bucket loads of black sh*te out of my lungs.

It calmed down after a while and I was as right as rain.

I social smoked for years, a few a week - but these days I no longer smoke at all. Haven't had even 1 single ciggie for more than a month.

No averse reactions stopping this time - but I wasnt surprised as my smoking before I stopped altogether was far too sporadic for the coughing up of tar etc.

Also here are some fun facts about what happens to your body when you quit.

  • In 20 minutes your blood pressure will drop back down to normal.
  • In 8 hours the carbon monoxide (a toxic gas) levels in your blood stream will drop by half, and oxygen levels will return to normal.
  • In 48 hours your chance of having a heart attack will have decreased. All nicotine will have left your body. Your sense of taste and smell will return to a normal level.
  • In 72 hours your bronchial tubes will relax, and your energy levels will increase.
  • In 2 weeks your circulation will increase, and it will continue to improve for the next 10 weeks.
  • In three to nine months coughs, wheezing and breathing problems will dissipate as your lung capacity improves by 10%.
  • In 1 year your risk of having a heart attack will have dropped by half.
  • In 5 years your risk of having a stroke returns to that of a non-smoker.
  • In 10 years your risk of lung cancer will have returned to that of a non-smoker.
  • In 15 years your risk of heart attack will have returned to that of a non-smoker.
