Despite what a few in here will have you believe (lol, just kidding lads), I think this will be the race of the spring. There are a number of bonafide superstars, emerging young guns and international stars going up against each other. I can't wait!

Anyways, I'm going down to Melbourne this year for the event. Very excited about it all, I'm going to be down there with a few locals so hopefully most things will be worked out but is there anything else in advance that I should know about the day?

I know it will be a booze up, but that aside, I want to get my selections in early before I get on the cans. How are the TAB queues early in the day down there? If I was able to, I'd really like to get rid of my phone and wallet after this, as I know both will cause me troubles!

Anyways, bring it on. Bring on God's Own...I really think FOO and Xcellent will test the champ as well

Yep I think youre on the money... The cox is going to be a gem this year...Makybe Diva, Lad of the Manor, Fields Of Omagh, Xcellant, Gods Own, Hotel Grand... At this stage my money will be on Xcellant but its hard to bet against Makybe Diva and Lad Of the Manor has been generous to be thus far in its campaign.

This is the race she has been set for. She'll be at her peak and she has already been toying with them :D If I wasn't on at 5/1 I'd still be getting plenty on and still will.

It's going to be a great race, but I can't see her getting beat.

what we did in melbourne last year was put all our bets on around 10am in the morning at the track, then fill the esky's with beer and then start the festivities

worked well and the lines were really small

and to give my tips, i think the diva is just ready to explode in this race. which is quite scary seeing as though she's won a couple of times this prep already. hotel grand and lad of the manor to fight out the placings. FOO will struggle. xcellent will not have a clue when he lines up against these horses instead of miss potential and distinctly secret (i thought this horse was about 20 years old LOL)

Nuffs I think FOO will be the same as Makybe and explode in this one. He is the same as her in the way that they have been set for this race. He won't beat her, but he'll run a good race I feel.

Think Lad for 2nd. And agree Hotel Grand will be in the firing line. I can't really line the rest up yet. All my coin is on the mare :D

I wish I'd bought the Makybe hats they were selling at the Australia Cup this year. Would have been a great way to cheer the mare home on Saturday week

Pfft lol

Nuffs, what has FOO done wrong this spring? It ran wide as dame edna last start and was chasing el segundo home well (who got a lucky rails run)

If FOO is more then 10/1, i'll have a stab! I could pick 5 of them

Cheers on the betting strategy for the day though, could be a winner

Diva was on fire in track gallop this morning at the Valley.

From Racenet -

AUSTRALASIA’S champion racehorse Makybe Diva worked in stunning fashion at Moonee Valley this morning and has firmed her grip on the $3 million Carlton Draught Cox Plate.
In her last public hit-out before next Saturday’s weight-for-age showdown, the mare recorded a slick 23.80 sec for the last 400m of her gallop - the fastest time of the morning.
The seven-year-old comfortably beat her stable mate Pente Costa (ridden by Steven King) over 1600m and the pair recorded 1:50:51 for the journey.
Top jockey Glen Boss rode her in the gallop and said she was “in the zone” this morning and is now on song for her main mission this Spring.
“She’s really enjoying herself at the moment, she’s in a good aggressive mood,” said Boss
“She’s not a Moonee Valley maiden anymore that’s for sure,” he quipped.
The Diva will now have a quiet week at Lee Freedman’s Rye training establishment ‘Markdel’ before making her next appearance at Moonee Valley on October 22.
Other Carlton Draught Cox Plate contenders that worked this morning included New Zealand star Xcellent.
The recent Group 1 Kelt Capital Stakes winner worked solo over 1600m and clocked 1:55:81 sec. He ran home the last 400m in 24:73 sec.
Sydney three-year-old Hotel Grand also had his first look at the Valley this morning.
Ridden by Jay Ford, the striking liver chestnut worked tractably over 1000m (1:13:26 sec/25:28 sec last 400m) and will return for next Tuesday’s Breakfast with the Stars.
All eyes were also on the Bart Cummings trained God’s Own. Ridden by his Cox Plate jockey Stephen Baster, he cruised with stable mate Kampsky over 1600m and won the gallop in 1:55:91 sec (25:16 last 400m).
The Gai Waterhouse trained Desert War, Lotteria and Dance Hero also appeared this morning and all looked in good order for Sydney’s leading trainer who is aiming to win her first Carlton Draught Cox Plate.

From the Melbourne Age:

Rivals dodge Diva's tilt at history
By Andrew Eddy October 17, 2005

AUSTRALIA'S champion Makybe Diva is likely to have just 11 opponents as she attempts to become Australasia's leading prizemoney earner in Saturday's $3 million Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.

A total of 34 horses were paid up at third acceptance time earlier this month, but as many as 22 of those will drop out when final payment of $16,500 is due at 8.30am tomorrow, following the annual Breakfast With The Best gallops.

Makybe Diva, who sizzled in a special gallop at Moonee Valley on Saturday morning in her final piece of fast work before Saturday's showdown, will earn $1.8 million if she can add this year's Cox Plate to her incredible record, to take her career earnings to $11,401,685 and surpass dual Cox Plate champion Sunline on $11,201,607.

A decision will then be made on whether the seven-year-old mare can indeed ensure her legend lives on in Australian racing for centuries to come by chasing a unique third consecutive victory in the Melbourne Cup just 10 days later.

Several well-credentialled horses will bypass the Cox Plate as their connections realise it is folly to take on Makybe Diva and company, while for others different goals are higher on the agenda.

The highly rated pair of Plastered and Perlin, who were to be aimed at Saturday's Cox Plate, will now meet in the group 2 Cathay Pacific Airways Cup (Moonee Valley Cup, 2500 metres) on the same day instead after connections abandoned plans to run in the 2040 metre weight-for-age event.

Owner Lloyd Williams said that the Melbourne Cup preparation for Perlin had meant he was now too "one-paced" for a Cox Plate, and he would appreciate the extra distance of the Moonee Valley Cup.

Plastered ran home fairly for seventh place in the Caulfield Cup but connections want to ensure he is fit on Melbourne Cup day so have chosen the longer race as his final lead-in to the cup.

Confectioner will need no help from the Moonee Valley committee to make the field as the Cox Plate has a maximum field number of 14, and there are certain to be no more than 14 acceptors tomorrow. It is not known whether 2004 Caulfield Guineas winner Econsul or Japan's Tosen Dandy will accept.

Confectioner was denied a run in the Caulfield Cup because he was so far down the elimination order and was not promoted into the field by the Melbourne Racing Club committee. He will go from the Cox Plate to the Sandown Classic next month and then to the Hong Kong international series in December.

Trainer John Hawkes will not look to add a Cox Plate to the Caulfield Cup he won with Railings. He said yesterday that none of his four remaining entrants — Studebaker, Ike's Dream, Dizelle or Shania Dane — was in good enough form to contest the Cox Plate.

Two of the remaining three-year-olds will start in the race, with Stephen Baster to ride God's Own for Bart Cummings while Jay Ford rides Hotel Grand for Cummings' son Anthony. Fellow three-year-olds Danger Looms and the Golden Slipper Stakes winner Stratum are being aimed at lesser events.

one word will dominate everything this whole week: FREEDMAN

and if the diva wins, she'll overtake Sunline as the biggest prizemoney winner

She's been set for it. Worked the house down on Saturday and Boss was super confident. All going the same as the previous 2 years when set for the Cup. I will be backing her, but I really hope she wins it. Would top her career nicely.

I really think this race is out of three horses
Makybe Diva
Xcellant
Lad of the Manor.
I think Lad of the Manor is huge overs at 9/1, Xcellant still has to prove itself but you cannot knonk what it has done so far in its career and MD is simply a champion.

The dangers in the race are the 3 year olds. At WFA, a top class 3 year old is very, very well weighted with 48.5. I think the Diva will win, she is just too good, but the danger for mine is Gods Own, and possibly Hotel Grand as well.

i think hotel grand has had the better prep out of the two and i'll be putting a little bit on him this saturday

don't think he'll get past the diva though

Hotel Grand is the one out of the 3 yr olds imo. He'll be up on the speed and will give a site. God's Own will get back a bit and if MD is 2-3 lengths away from him she will beat him home for sure.

The other thing about God's Own is the conditions of the last race which flattered him. The first knock he got helpd as it put him back in a position where hs sat quite till the home straight. He copped a knock in the straight but kept coming. They also went like the clappers in the first 1000m and set it up for backmarkers. Paratroopers was walking the last 100m. No doubt it was a big run from God's Own, but not as big as it may have looked. He'll be a good horse but not sure he warrents being 2nd favourite in a cox plate.

FOO always runs a blinder. Lad of the Manor is a track specialist and has been going with Makybe this prep. Desert War can't be knocked. Lotteria and Confectioner will run well. Super Kid was a big run last start. Xcellent still needs to prove himself in oz but does look like a gun runner. I don't think anthing well beat Makybe, but there is a number of live hopes for the places.
