CREAGH NAMED DRAGONS 2010 ‘PLAYER OF THE YEAR’

8/10/2010 8:30:40 PM

Premiership winning Back Rower Ben Creagh has tonight been rewarded for an outstanding season , by winning the ‘Cellarbrations’ Player of the Year Medal at the Dragons end of season Presentation night, held at the Chifley Hotel in Wollongong.
Creagh, 25, played 26 games in the Red V this season, scoring 10 tries and is the first player to win the prestigious award ‘back-to-back’ and joins former Dragons Jason Ryles as the only two players to win the medal on three separate occasions.
The University of Wollongong junior also gained individual representative honours with NSW Country as well as playing two games for NSW in the 2010 Origin series.
The medal is the Dragons highest honour, determined through a voting system which involves the NRL players and Coaching staff and qualitative factors taken into account by the Club’s Rugby League Management. Previous ‘Player of the Year’ award winners include Ben Creagh (2009), Jason Ryles (2008), Ben Creagh (2007), Mark Gasnier and Jason Ryles (2006), Luke Bailey (2005), Mathew Head (2004), Ben Hornby (2003), Shaun Timmins (2002), Jason Ryles (2001), Trent Barrett (2000) and Jamie Ainscough (1999).
Other award winners on the night included Captain Ben Hornby who was presented with the Dragons ‘Immortals Trophy’ as selected by the St George ‘Immortals’ in consultation with the Dragons Coaching staff. The ‘Immortals’ trophy is not only based on the performance, but also on criteria that reflects what the ‘Immortals’ represent such as attitude, commitment and dedication across all aspects of athletic and professional endeavour.
Fullback Darius Boyd added the Red V Members ‘Player of the Year’ award to his Clive Churchill Medal, the RLPA ‘Player of the Year’ award and the ‘Spirit of ANZAC medal after a stellar season in 2010.
Winger Jason Nightingale was awarded the ‘Geoff Selby Memorial Coaches Award’, voted on by the Dragons NRL Coaching Staff. This award is a tribute to former Dragons player Geoff Selby, who was tragically killed in a car accident in 1989. It is presented to the player that best demonstrates his working qualities, puts actions before words and the type of player team mates want to play with.
Front Row Forward Michael Weyman was rewarded for his efforts away from football by being awarded the ‘Mark Coyne Trophy’ for career development. Weyman is currently studying to become a Civil Engineer and has organised his own work experience with a local Engineering company in the off-season. He also holds a Heavy Vehicle and Heavy Machinery licence.
Toyota Cup Hooker Mitch Rein was rewarded for his good form in 2010, by receiving the ‘Paul McGregor Toyota Cup Player of the Year’ Award. Rein played 18 games during the season leading from the front and also started a Diploma of Education to become a Physical Education teacher when his Rugby League career comes to an end.

Glad to see these players honored, Nightingale & Creagh are forum favourites for their endless energy, skill & work-rates.

And Boyd was the most improved player since 2009, he was at his strongest mid-season, but always safe at the back and his involvement in our attack is the biggest difference between our performance in 2009 & 2010.

nightingale had a massive season. must have come close... some of his match winning plays often went unnoticed...good to see him get the coaches award. his play in the final against the tigers where he made the break, got tackled and then got up and ran 40 meters to support young and score under the posts won us that match...

He is soooo soft.

Takes the ball up into the teeth of opposition packs at the speed of a centre!

Runs crash lines off short balls from Hornby several times every game!

Wins most tackles when he is the first to make contact!

Yes they are right! He is soft!!!

Now then why does the St George Illawarra Dragons vote him the best in a Premiership Winning Year?

They must be the poorest judges of player talent... :sarcasm:
