Mitchell Starc has announced his retirement from T20Is in order to prioritise Australia's heavy Test schedule from late next year and the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Starc, 35, played 65 T20Is and was part of the Australia side that won the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE. He last featured in the format at the 2024 World Cup in the Caribbean. His 79 T20I wickets currently puts him second for Australia with his best of 4 for 20 coming against West Indies in 2022.

"Test cricket is and has always been my highest priority," Starc said. "I have loved every minute of every T20 game I have played for Australia, particularly the 2021 World Cup, not just because we won but the incredible group and the fun along the way.

From mid-2026 Australia face a hectic run in Test cricket including a home series against Bangladesh, a tour of South Africa, a four-match series against New Zealand, five Tests away in India in January 2027, the one-off 150th anniversary match against England at the MCG and then an away Ashes in mid-2027.

The ODI World Cup, which will be staged in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, will be held in October and November 2027 with Australia the defending champions.

"Looking ahead to an away Indian Test tour, the Ashes and an ODI World Cup in 2027, I feel this is my best way forward to remain fresh, fit and at my best for those campaigns," Starc said. "It also gives the bowling group time to prepare for the T20 World Cup in the matches leading into that tournament."

They normally retire from red ball stuff and keep playing the hit and giggle for pocket money.

Good luck to Starcy, he's been great, although he had his moments.

Getting some of his talks on podcasts from around 2022 on facebook

Shits all over the other panelists with his knowledge of the game and approach to cricket

Thought he was one of the best umpires ever

RIP Dickie

I think on the face of it it is a good idea. I'd possibly extend it. I would allow fast bowlers to be subbed out between spells so they can go and lay up. Get massaged etc and get a specialist fielder on to replace them. Cricket is in need of doing everything to encourage express fast bowling.

That young Indian batsman is one to watch. I doubt he is actually 14 but even if he is 16 he is bloody good for that age - but he really looks like a slogger.

Is this the brain child of Toddy?

Whats next ? 4 interchangeable reserves ?

Understand the concussion sub, but f..k me this is dumber than some of the BBL shit they come up with

This is like the 4th time they've tried this.

The reciprocal sub is dumb as f**k but injury subs are well overdue.

Pat Cummins, Travis Head offered $10 million each to quit Australian cricket for T20

Calls for the BBL to be privatised have intensified after it was revealed Australia's captain Pat Cummins and deputy Travis Head were offered nearly $10 million a year to play T20 cricket overseas fulltime.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports an IPL team made the offers this year, which were rejected by the players, who cited their commitment to the Australian cricket team.

But news of the offers were discussed between Cricket Australia, the state associations and the players' union as they consider privatising the Big Bash League.

Cummins' international cricket salary is around $3 million, taking into account his captaincy duties.

Money generated from selling off Big Bash franchises would raise player salaries, and also link the T20 league into a growing global network of franchise owners.

Cummins' IPL auction value with Sunrisers Hyderabad last year was worth almost $3.7 million, while Head went for about $1.2 million at the same team.

While cricket players are the top earners in the domestic sport market, they fall behind top earner Oscar Piastri and Australians competing in NBA and NFL. All the top earning athletes compete in sports with private ownership.

South African Heinrich Klaasen, a teammate of Head and Cummins at Mumbai, retired from all forms of international cricket in June to play franchise cricket only.
"I spent a lot of time with Klaasen over a period of time while he was making decisions," Head said. "I don't think there's any written rule on what you should or shouldn't play or what you should or shouldn't give up. There's an idea on what people should think, and what they should do.

"Playing international cricket is the pinnacle. A lot of people hold it so high in regard, but some people don't. People have got to respect that there's no one way to go about it.

"A lot of people would give their left nut to play international cricket, and that comes from someone who's played a lot of cricket or someone who's played none, who wants to do it. So when someone gives up that opportunity it's 'why are you doing it?' But there's a reason, and you've got to respect that.

"What's happening in the world at the moment is people have opportunities to make those decisions, which we've never had [before]. So it's hard to knock someone who is making a decision in their own personal state and trying to get job satisfaction. Fair play."

well this is getting messy, no doubt there will be some T20 only players who will take up certain offers but those blokes will never lay test cricket anyway and they certainly wont be offered 10 million

some test players may not be able to refuse that sort of money
