No, and no.

ANTiLAG’s theory is closest but it’s not quite right either.

Hint since it’s been nearly a day - the person who captained that day was playing their second to final* FC match for Australia, had already played their final full international, and it was the only game they ever captained Australia in.

*I had to amend that as I originally had final FC match, when it was his second-to-final one. The point about it being his only captaincy experience for Australia after he'd played his final ever test stands.

Another hint to narrow it down a bit - the player in question is still playing.

It was a tour game.

Player is a currently contracted state cricker.

The captain was neither the tour captain nor vice-captain (both were rested). This player has since retired from professional cricket.

Further hint - the player has since represented Australia in at least one full international, but not a test.

NB - The CA XI is not Australia. That’s a select XI picked by CA. The Australian team is either referred to as ‘Australia’ or ‘Australians’ if its a tour match.

My first thought was Dave Warner for his T20 debut but the above craps all over my not-so-bright idea..

Random guess - Fawad Ahmed

First class is a minimum 3 day game. This isn’t someone who debuted in an ODI.

Not Fawad Ahmed.

So, the captain might be a Chris Rogers or George Bailey type who stepped in during a tour game and retired or was dropped not long after.

And the player was either a youngster or a limited over specialist.

Wouldn't be the great Mitchell Marsh would it?

It would not be the great Mitchell Marsh. The captain would be a player like that, but it’s neither of those two.

It happened in the last decade.

So it is not Mitch Swepson then.

No - Swepson's debut was for the CA XI, which is not Australia.

This player debuted for 'Australians' vs 'Tour side'

Further hint - this player wasn't even in the touring party, but was part of a developmental group playing in the country where the match happened. The tour had started badly, and a number of senior players were rested due to the high work load leading to needing an eleventh man.

They did not bat and sent down a handful of overs - despite being predominantly a batsman who bowls a bit.

Further hint, as we're into the third day on this one.

There's really only one country we tour these days where we play enough tour matches that someone may need to be drafted in.

I do believe David Warner played for Australia prior to playing any first class games but that isn’t the question

I worked it out on The Googles yesterday, if no one else has a non-cheating idea I'll answer it.

Funnily enough this player is talked about (sarcastically) on here reasonably often these days lol

That's what gave me the idea for the question - he comes up on here. A lot. :p

Also Bazal, after three days it isn't so much cheating as research so you may as well go for it.
