Cronulla Sharks coach Shane Flanagan operated bank account against club's wishes

August 20, 2013 8:58PM

CRONULLA was tonight hit with more controversy following revelations that coach Shane Flanagan operated a ‘High Performance Unit’ bank account against the club’s wishes.

The development came as Sharks skipper Paul Gallen was also identified as the player involved in a mis-managed third party deal that earned Cronulla a $150,000 salary cap breach in July.

Flanagan’s account was discovered after its details were included on an e-mail inviting directors and sponsors to a coaching luncheon at the Royal Motor Yacht Club in early February.

The coach was insulted when asked to justify the account and claimed he shut it down at the direction of former CEO Bruno Cullen.

But Cullen last night denied any knowledge of the account, telling ABC’s 7:30: “You just don’t do things that way.”

Flanagan argued the account was necessary to raise funds for gym equipment – through functions and golf days - because the club did not provide enough money for the football department to compete with other teams.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal it was the second private account used at the club in recent years, with former coach Ricky Stuart operating the first version to fund team camps and equipment in 2009.

Cronulla’s board expressed its disapproval around the time Flanagan took over in 2010, wanting all transactions to be run through the club’s official St. George account.

But the Sharks have no record of paying for the services – or expensive supplements – incurred by sports scientist Steve Dank in early 2011, the period which has subjected Cronulla to ASADA investigation.

Flanagan last night denied any of Dank’s expenses have been met by his Westpac account, which was opened almost a year after the sports scientist’s departure.

He could not say when the first account was shut down, but understood Dank was willing to work free of charge.

Gallen’s deal was with former security provider E-Group, which paid the captain about $120,000 over three years.

Upon discovering E-Group had threatened to make the payments public amid a dispute over its service contract, Flanagan wrote a frantic e-mail to the club that was aired on last night’s program.

“Everyone needs to be aware that if Paul is exposed any form of inspection or scrutiny due to E-Group contract details, the club arranged all details of past contracts not Paul,” Flanagan’s e-mail read.

Well no, Flanno doing all the work for the gym was reported at the time. Here's a forum topic on it

http://forums.leagueunlimited.com/showthread.php?t=375784

And an article saying he oversaw the project

You have just made something up with no proof

That is if a non-club "club" account was used only for that purpose; clearly the 7.30 report inferred that this may not be the case.

The 730 report had statements from that very account (you see it in cullens hands) yet they only infer wrongdoing? Surely if something was halfway suspicious they would report on it?

No, not necessarily. Who knows, might be a follow up story.

Obviously they paid for that stuff. It must've come from the regular accounts because Cullen had the HPU statement in his hands and their were no "suspicious" entries on it. If there was, the report would've went TO TOWN.

In 2010/2011 the club was broke and had a shit roster. Flano blamed a lack of ability to recruit on the clubs poor resources. The gym was in a besser block shack behind the ET stand which floods in heavy rains (still is, but its just for juniors now). He goes to the board and says "I need a new gym". They tell him there's no coin. He says, if I fund it and build it can you give me the space under the new southern stand which is currently a function room. They say go for your life. So he goes to all sponsors, stakeholders etc with the hat for money for his new gym: I know this because I was asked. It's a running joke around the club that he bought the boxing ring and floor mats off eBay. He tiled the floor himself.

The sharks have literally hundreds of incorporated bodies with separate bank accounts (leagues club snooker club, squash club etc).

The clubs a shambles, no doubt and I know this better than most, but there really is nothing to this HPU stuff.

I have no problems with the gym. News Ltd are saying there are no records of any payments for Danks services and supplements. Which means the questions over how Dank was paid need to be answered

Johnsy, just refresh my memory, there was an investigation by Schubert into that, what was the outcome?

Why would news ltd have any intimate knowledge of the clubs ledgers and accounts, particularly surrounding a very sensitive issue? Don't believe anything you read in the papers. Remember, this is the same news ltd that employs Rebecca Wilson and Phil Rothfield.

Shit, the cronulla supporters are fired up; that report must have hit a nerve. I wonder.

So, put yourself in the shoes of a Sharks supporter for a minute. We didn't ask for any of this "alleged" stuff to happen. It's totally out of our control, but we still have to put up with all the 'death riders' and trolls that frequent the Sharks forum. It' gets old real quick.

Tell me you wouldn't get fired up...

Yes possibly, but shit; I (if I was a supporter) would want to know who paid Dank and for the supplements; I would not just run with as implied - it was a freebie or that Flanno and his crew said this and we believe it.

I would be totally pissed off with the club.

I'll pass judgment once this is all done, dusted and out in the open. I actually wish it was all done and we could get on with things and deal with whatever happens.

Don't think there is much in this story, unless there is more to come.

It looks to me like a way to take eyes off Essendon for a couple of days.
We ave known about much of this stuff for a while, except for the naming of Gallen.

Who was the fan a coupe of years ago that promised 'make believe' money to a club to help them out? Was that towards Cronulla? May have been a HPU donation?

Seriously, some of you dickheads have nothing better to do than death ride the Sharks.

How about you try to show some kind of decency, and stop being dickheads . Sharks fans didn't ask for this. Sharks fans are hardly the ones who continually bag out other clubs. So why the hate? Or are you dickheads just happy it's not your club (for now)?
