Cronulla waiting for coach to call
November 27, 2003 www.foxsports.com 3pm

CRONULLA is still waiting to hear back from coach Chris Anderson but expects to resolve the coaching drama at the National Rugby League club in the next few days.

Anderson, who returned yesterday from coaching Australia to a 3-0 Test victory over Great Britain, is expected to front the board either tomorrow or on Saturday to discuss his future at the club.

Sharks chairman Barry Pierce said he had contacted Anderson's manager and had hoped to hear from the coach today.

"No he hasn't (called) yet, I'm waiting to hear from him," Pierce said.

"I would really like to have it (the meeting) - we can't tonight now but at least in the next few days because it's in the best interests of everyone.

"Possibly tomorrow or even on the weekend."

The board meeting is to discuss whether Anderson should be sacked from the club after he incurred his third breach just before departing for Britain in October.

Anderson ditched support staff (one of which was Pierce's son Greg) for the Kangaroos tour in an apparent retaliation for his son Jarrad not being offered another contract at Cronulla.

Anderson's manager George Mimis said he or Anderson will be contacting Cronulla soon.

"We will arrange one (a meeting) shortly," Mimis said.

"It's not on my radar (at the moment), I'm having meetings all afternoon."

Several leading Kangaroos players have stood by Anderson saying his coaching techniques were obviously excellent after the 3-0 sweep.

Anderson said yesterday if he does not coach at the NRL level he would reconsider his future in the Australian job.

AAP

What a joke. This bloody George Mimis is half our bloody problem. 'It's not even on my radar'. Give me a break. You've known D-Day was on for weeks, you should have arranged a meeting long before Anderson got back. I'm not saying the meeting needed to be today, but it should have been scheduled for tomorrow at the latest.

To treat the instruction of the Board with such disrespect is just not on. While our Board leave alot to be desired, their request wasn't unreasonable.

As for Anderson himself - Well, every quote from him on this matter in recent weeks has been along the lines of 'I want to get it sorted out straight away.' Yeah, it sure looks like you do, Chris.

Sack the friggin' lot of them. Coach, Board, Senior Staff, especially the marketing clowns, the friggin' lot.

Why FFS can't Pierce contact Anderson personally to arrange the meeting?

It's the Board that wants to make a decision on Anderson's future ahead of time, rather than waiting until the end of 2004, so it is up to them to take the initiative. This should have been fleshed out days, if not weeks, ago.

The more I hear about this whole saga, the more inept I believe Pierce and the Board of our club are.

the more I hear about it the more I cringe. Just sort the problem out and stick by the decision.

Who said there's no meeting been arranged? The papers?

We're dealing with the Sharks board here, proven liars from way back. Remember when we didn't have Anderson and we weren't getting him according to the board, even though we all knew we were?

Neither party is going to announce when it is and have hordes of media descend on them are they? So they throw off.

Maybe Dec 5th, the day there is rumoured to be something happening is the day - best day ever when the new jersey goes on sale too isn't it?

Frenz, didn't Mimis say there had been nothing arranged? The papers obviously called him, but then again I wouldn't be surprised if the slimey little weasel lied, I mean him and his clients are not the most ethical blokes on the block, are they?

Hey! Maybe Mimis could run for our board...:)

He played pretty well under Murray at the Mariners as well.

Kept Goldthorpe out of Firsts even though Goldthorpe played in the Tri Series.

It's quite simple..the players WANT Anderson to continue coaching.

We had a poor season this season because of poor recruiting.

We have rectified the situation this season considerably.

Anderson was given 3 year contract of 'FREE REIGN' he has only completed 2 years.

The board want to sack him over petty ego damage.

We don't want any more drama during the offseason.

LET HIM FINISH WHAT HE SET OUT TO DO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some of the high-profile players say that ALL the players want him. Of course, any player who doesn't want him is no longer there. I think that all the players support The Coach - I don't think most of them care very much who that is they just want to get on with it.

If recruiting means getting rid of experienced, quality players and replacing them with inexperienced youngsters then yeah. And as Sullyfan points out who did the recruiting??

We go from a 4th looking to get better to a 13th looking to get worse (or at best to struggle). Perhaps your dictionary has a different definition of "rectified" - my understanding is that it means to make better.

From 4th to 13th in one year. Can we go from 13th to 15th in another year. Anything is possible - stay tuned.
FREE REIGN    : makes me think of Amin, Pinochet, Mugabe, Hitler, Mussolini, Peron - the list just goes on

Do you really think that if Cronulla were winning but Ando was publicly criticising the board - ie bruising their egos - that we would be having this drama? Winners get to step on people's toes - losers don't.
Round 20 last year - vs Penrith. 15,000 people cheered Preston Campbell when he came on the field. We lost 20-0. Afterwards there was a presentation to be given by CA. The crowd that remained booed him to the point where he stalked off. At this point it should be clear that the supporters don't want him - never mind the Board.

Absolutely.
So where did it come from? Was the Coach doing his job properly, but being denigrated by the Powers-That-Be?
Or did we have a coach who created a massive losing streak on the basis of massive arrogance and then began slinging s**t everywhere to deflect responsibility from himself?

If the old saying "actions speak louder than words" is true then it appears that he set out to get us to the wooden spoon. The Club, the fans, the players are all demoralised - lets see how much further it can go.

Right on Bull Shark!

The club has realised that Anderson must go to stop the bleeding. The Anderson experiment has been a failure, and it's time for everyone to move on.

Rectified? Means that we have recruited well for next season. I might add that some of those promising juniors that were blooded this year ie. Galloway will make a huge impression next season. If those players go well in 2004 whether Anderson is still coaching or not I hope you heap praise on his recruiting like you are heaping blame on him for last seasons recruiting.

As for the recruiting....I think most people agree there was not much talent on offer to pick up last year. Anderson took a punt on some no name recruits and they were just not up to it. They were also putting alot of faith in some of the juniors but they probably needed another season under the belt. When Anderson took over the side last year it was a side coming to an end of a 7 to 9 year cycle. Great juniors that have been at the club for donkies years but were starting to get on the wrong side of the age spectrum for the pace of modern football. These cycles happen in any club and you have a lean year or two until you mould a new young force together. We have this young force coming through..........But the club has also made the best dash for player talent that was on offer this year. Vagana will give our backline experience it was badly lacking last season. He was the best player on the market for god sake and we got him!!!!

Free reign was what Anderson wanted for three years and the board signed off on it. He basically said I know what it takes to win a premiership but you can't interfere with my plan. He said there would be some tough times but that the club WILL be better for it. The successful clubs in the past are the ones that have invested in youth. JUST LOOK AT PENRITH ! There juniors finally came through this year. To compare Anderson to any of those past evil dictators is immature and disgraceful. DO YOU KNOW WHAT HITLER DID???????????? How can you compare him to Anderson?

As for demoralised......Yes any Shark fan would be demoralised with this years season. You have a real bad one now and then. But the way the board has conducted themselves is what is rubbing salt into the wounds that are trying to heal up. You mentioned the players being demoralised. YES your right they WANT Anderson to coach and they are sick of the boards petty stance and they want it settled so they can focus on an exciting 2004.

Now go and print your post BULL SHARK and use it as dunny paper as that is all it is worthy of. Because all that dribble should of stayed in your head and give yourself a migraine and not inflict it on us!

Well said, DS.

Unfortunately, I think the children running our club will get their way and get rid of Ando... They are a joke. As we will be next year.

Next year couldn't possibly be any more of joke than 2003 was with Ando. Terrible year.
