Same teams got 16,000 at Cronulla in Round 10 on a Saturday night.

Compare the teams who played in that game to those who played tonight and you will understand why I called them crap teams. Plus the Sharks had lost their previous 5 games and the Tigers had lost their previous six. So neither team had winning form and it was both teams last game foe the season.

But this is kind of the problem...

When it rains, the hill becomes a mud pile and there is no roof for cover.

When there is nothing to prevent the rain from making the event shit, you have to accept that it will inevitably be part of many of the games....

A bit of rain on the day is one thing but this year it's been days and days of torrential rain in the lead up to the game which makes the hill a shambles

Don't think it matters who we play in week 1, Cowboys or Penrith will produce a similar crowd at Allianz. I assuming manly south will be on the Friday also at Allianz and our game on the Saturday

Roosters v Cowboys/Penrith @allianz Saturday night 24k
Manly v souths @allianz Friday night 27k

You can't predict the weather therefore need to play games in venues suitable regardless of conditions. NRL needs to bring in some min stadium criteria and a deadline for compliance to force this issue.

So do we just hope that, in '15(and '16/'17/'18/etc...), it just doesnt rain?? ever....

You cant say "dont think about the bad crowds, it was raining". Rain effected games is a fact of suburban ground.

I went to Leichardt a couple of years ago on a wet night. It would probably be great on a sunny Sunday arvo but that night was not enjoyable at all.

A billion dollar league shouldn't have fans sitting on hills, it has outgrown it.

If you were accepting new clubs today there is no way a team wins the bid while saying they will play out of dilapidated grounds where fans have to sit in the dirt.

au contraire...

one of the appealing elements for some of the local grounds is the ability to take a blanket, take the family and sit on some nice grass, as opposed to sitting stuffed in seating that has less legroom than a tigerair flight...

Maybe but it ensures a crowd of 5,000.

Perhaps you are looking at the wrong league. This is perfectly acceptable for a NSW cup match at Henson Park but is not acceptable for a major sporting league

On a sunny Sunday arvo with a 15,000 crowd you either go to the grandstand or, if you are on the hill, you watch most of the game on the big screen because your view is limited and variable depending on what the crowd in front of you is doing.

Does anyone partly go to the footy to catch up with local footy people and also socialise? These are the reasons I enjoy going to Leichhardt and I think it also keeps some connection with the local community. Junior rugby league almost died in the Balmain district during the late 90s but is now thriving.

Also as this area is increasingly gentrified many of the locals love going to Leichhardt on a sunny day but would probably not go at all if the team completely moved to homebush. AFL have been successful with the centralised stadium policy but I know a few supporters who would give their left nut to have one game a year at the traditional home ground.

I'd like to see your little picnic when it's pissing down rain or the hill is packed.

FTR, the crowd at Henson park is always 8972.

Drove past Hunter stadium about half an hour ago, people every where. Going to be a massive crowd I think.

I agree - its a great stadium and dry. My only complaint was the light beer. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I know what you mean, the mid strength shits me to tears but i'd rather drink that than nothing. Saturday 5.30pm games and Sunday games are the only ones that have heavy, games/events that start after 6pm or 7pm they go back to the mid.

The appropriate amount of games to be played at these grounds needs to be precisely determined though. For Leichardt it probably sits at two, and both need to be scheduled as either Saturday or Sunday day games.

Those inne city gentry types you mentioned cannot sustain any more I am afraid. Plus the five games played there has come at a severe cost to the scorned Campbelltown market it would appear.
