Bromance crumbles

THEIR'S was a budding ''bromance'': the Oscar-winning actor and his eccentric multimillionaire property developer chum.

In 2007 Russell Crowe and Albert Bertini looked as though they could conquer the world.

The only problem was, someone forgot to tell the world.

Since those heady days relations between Bertini and Crowe have cooled significantly, friends informing PS the actor was not happy about Bertini, who appeared on Crowe's Secret Millionaire TV show, being constantly described as one his ''best mates''.

Central to the rumoured falling out has been the ongoing saga surrounding the $40 million redevelopment of Crowe's beloved Rabbitohs' heartland in Redfern, the new leagues club that is now four years behind schedule - a project that was to have been built by Bertini's company Trivest.

Last week Rabbitohs' management plastered signs on the Chalmers Street building making it clear Bertini's company was no longer working on the club. This week Rabbitohs' players were on site, working with a new builder as they aim to open the doors early in 2012.

Bertini did not return PS's calls this week but the flamboyant tycoon ( who told The Sun-Herald in September he was so ''hot'' it threatened other men) has been busy making changes in his own domain, having recently wed his 24-year-old girlfriend Renee, who is believed to be the 49-year-old's fifth wife. His York Street corporate headquarters, more like a glitzy youth hostel cum nightclub complete with a disco dance floor, cocktail bar, giant crucifix and bowling alley, is for sale, along with the Mosman mansion, Karawa, he paid $22.5 million for in 2008.

Industry observers say he will be lucky to get his money back.

Bertini had grand plans for the Mosman property, including installing a $1 million James Bond-style subterranean elevator so he could conveniently get to his yacht, formerly owned by the Kennedy family.

In August Bertini was reportedly ''shocked'' when Strike Force Raptor officers called him as they raided one of his properties, a former factory in Alexandria that was being used as a headquarters by the Hells Angels. It was subsequently shut down. Bertini has said he was not aware a Hells Angels clubhouse was operating inside the property.

The future of the Leagues Club looks very frail & it would not be wise to believe all the spin coming from the board.

i live too far from the club to justify going there post game, or even for a few beers on a friday night... so this club is of little consequence to me. although it would be nice if it succeeded beyond expectations and quickly made it into a position where it would provide the football club with an additional source of income... i'd hope that all rabbitohs fans were hoping for the same thing

Aaron, we need the Leagues Club in order for us to survive as you have correctly pointed out so yes that would be the preferred outcome.
But dont expect the new board / management to get the club running to secure it's long term future as it's the most expensive piece of real estate in the inner city & it's nowhere near ANZ Stadium our so called spiritual home ground & i dont see how it's taken 4 years for the club to be redeveloped if everyone involved was on the same level regarding the club remaining in Redfern that trades successfully & continues to have a prosperous future.

You seriously are a stooge of the worse kind. You are someone who knows that South sydney Leagues Club has not contributed financially to the Football club since the 60's. The only financial transactions between the two entities since that time has been funds transferred from the Football Club to the Leagues Club to keep it afloat during its interminable death throws.
Please do not treat all readers of forums such as this as complete imbeciles.
You can not continue with your ridiculous anti - Souths ravings any more without disclosing either your identity or your perceived reasons for doing so.
COME CLEAN!

This is the most disjointed rave I have read. It makes no sense.
