Souths originally rejected Wing

At a stage-managed press conference at Sydney Airport yesterday, it was claimed that all South Sydney had to do to bring home prodigal son Craig Wing was ask.
We were told that it took a phone call from Wing on his own accord two weeks ago to co-owner Russell Crowe to pave the way for a four-year deal.
It sounded too good to be true - like a Hollywood script.
And it was.
Here is the proof that Wing was in negotiations with Souths but was rejected in April because he was asking too much, believed to be $450,000 per season.
In an email obtained by the smh.com.au, sent to Wing's former manager Steve Gillis on April 12, Souths chief executive Shane Richardson said the club could not afford Wing because of salary cap pressures.
"As you know I was keen to have Craig as part of our recruitment plans for last year but due to his contractual situation we were unable to do it," Richardson wrote.
"Unfortunately we are not in a position to make an offer due to Salary Cap pressure at this time.
"We would have to move on a player to be able to make a decent offer and at this time we are unable to do it."
smh.com.au also understands that Wing wanted to remain at hooker, where he currently plays for the Roosters, but Souths were on the hunt for a five-eighth or halfback.

Yes Russ you just never asked all these years LMAO, and Wing forgot he had a get out clause and Phac, Mason gave you a good bashing last night on the footy show. Try as you may you will never be one of the boys.

i thought the interviewing on the footy show was weird, you had one guy who is a complete professional and 4 not so professional guys. HAC and Crowe seem to be really making souths a more 'professional' team in a corporate sense if you will. From what they were saying no player should hold any press conference or interview regarding where he is playing next year. Everyone knows O'Meley is leaving the bulldogs but according to Mason there isnt going to be any tension there because he wasnt paraded. Everyone knows he is leaving same as Wing so what is the problem?

This signing has really got the League world talking. So there was an e-mail 2 months ago between Wings manager and Souths CEO Shane Richardson. Back then Souths were not in a position to offer Wing a contract with what he was being shopped around for at the time.

Now we are 2 months down the track and Craig Wing decided to go out on his own to see if he could get something happening. After speaking with Crowe, Wing has found himself a deal that has suited his needs and not of his former manager. Do you think that Gillis is feeling a little dirty that he has been dumped at this time of contract negotiations? I think so.

Now the papers have came out and made some huge accusations in regards to Souths having to sack players. Firstly Souths spoke to Gulavao well before Wing came in the picture. Souths are paying over the odds for a guy playing Reggies.

All the other guys that are apparently going to be sacked are in fact off contract. Souths offered Stuart Webb a contract and he has chosen to knock it back. It looks like he will be going to the Warriors. Another guy that is off contract is Luke Stuart, who has been offered a contract and is currently in negotiations. The papers have said the other day that he was gone.

So the fact that people are saying that we let these guys go just to sign Wing is just a lie. Every year each team has to Juggle the Salary Cap. There are players that will leave off their own back and others that are forced to leave. Why now is there all the media attention now? I'm sick of it all and can't wait til we start the footy tonight that we can all go back to discussing what we all should. And that is the footy on the field....

From my perspective every player has the right to so and sign were they want too and yes some times we get disappointed and thats a fact of league we accept. The annoying part was the fake show souths put on claiming Wing was never asked to come back and all the rest of that dribble. The biggest looser from this was Wing and if he had his time again I doubt he would have let them parade him like a poodle.
