Crystal Palace 1-0 Walsall: FT Report

PA

Andy Johnson fired Crystal Palace into the top six with a controversial late penalty to leave Walsall staring relegation in the face after a fifth straight defeat.

Johnson's 28th league goal settled a match utterly dominated by the home side but was tough on Walsall, who argued long and hard that Tommy Black had dived to win the spot kick, the only goal of the game.

Black had only been on the pitch for two minutes when he went down easily under a challenge from Paul Ritchie, and referee David Pugh pointed straight to the spot.

Saddlers goalkeeper Jimmy Walker had been inspired all game to deny Palace from a host of chances, and he saved Johnson's initial kick only to watch helplessly as the First Division top scorer stroked home from the rebound.

The Saddlers came with a negative approach, getting men behind the ball, and with Lee Bradbury a lone figure up front, they looked a side who had failed to score in four games.

The tension of their situation was beginning to show for Walsall and Walker was at his best twice in quick succession to keep the score goalless in the 31st minute.

Aki Riihilahti won a free kick outside the penalty area and Walker acrobatically tipped Neil Shipperley's goalbound header over from Butterfield's delivery, which deflected off the wall.

From the resulting corner by Shaun Derry, Butterfield was allowed the time to pick out Shipperley again, but this time Walker tipped his header around the far post.

Walker then denied Johnson with a fine leg save when the First Division top scorer was clean through from a Nico Vaesen goal kick.

Johnson also headed wide after Popovic's flick-on from Riihilahti's right-wing cross, but Darren Wrack had a glorious chance for Walsall before the interval, just failing to make contact with Mark Wright's pull-back from the byline.

It was Riihilahti's turn to be denied by Walker after the break, the Finn's header from Granville's free kick drifting wide of the far post after a vital touch from the keeper.

Bradbury finally had Walsall's first shot on target in the 66th minute, and his effort was quickly followed by a long-range shot from Wright, but both were tame.

The game then exploded into life when Ritchie brought down Black to concede a penalty with five minutes remaining.

Walsall were furious but Johnson stepped up coolly to score after Walker had saved his initial spot-kick.

You'd have to say, we are the form team going into the play-offs. We've beaten every team around us recently except Wigan. I reckon we can do it, would love to beat West Spam in the final!

:D Crystal Palace snuck into the Nationwide Division One play-offs at Highfield Road but on the most dramatic of afternoon's they were almost made to pay for a lacklustre display in losing 2-1 at Coventry.

The Eagles looked jaded for long spells against the battling Sky Blues and were deservedly beaten by goals from Mo Konjic and Michael Doyle. But in the end they were saved by events out of their control and with Brian Deane netting a last-minute equaliser for West Ham at Wigan, the Eagles scraped into the top six in the dying moments of the season at the Latics' expense.

The Sky Blues started at a lightning pace and after just two minutes a long ball over the top from Bjarni Gudjonsson split the Palace defence. Andy Morrell reacted smartly to bring the Icelander's pass under control and, after shrugging off his marker, he was unlucky to see the ball strike the post after clipping it over the advancing Nico Vaesen.

However, it was not long before Coventry got their reward for an energetic opening as with four minutes gone Gary McSheffrey's curling effort was tipped over and from the resulting corner Konjic rose unmarked to head home.

Palace sought an immediate response and Calum Davenport had to be at his best to divert Julian Gray's cross away to safety under pressure from Neil Shipperley. Then 10 minutes later Wayne Routledge worked space well on the right before whipping in a cross that Konjic headed behind with Tony Popovic ready to pounce.

The visitors were starting to find their rhythm with Routledge and Gray beginning to enjoy some success out wide. But after 27 minutes they were stunned on the break again as McSheffrey strode purposefully forward from midfield before slipping the ball into the feet of Doyle and the young Irishman slid the ball expertly across Vaesen and inside the far post.

Then things nearly got worse for Iain Dowie's beleaguered Palace four minutes before the break when a stinging shot from Gudjonsson had Vaesen scrambling across his line to save.

The visitors knew they needed a breakthrough quickly if they were to haul themselves back into the game. However, after the restart it was Coventry who came closest to adding to their tally when Youssef Safri's curling free-kick was palmed away.

Dowie clearly sensed the need for some fresh legs and, with events elsewhere still going against them, he sent on a third striker in Dougie Freedman to replace Mikele Leigertwood.

Less than five minutes later that change yielded immediate reward as Andy Johnson crossed from right and Freedman bustled past his marker to guide the ball home.

Suddenly Palace had renewed hope and with the travelling fans finding their voice, the yellow shirts piled forward.

Gray blasted a glorious chance over when the ball dropped to him in the box then just a minute later the same player seemed certain to score when he was teed up in space by Michael Hughes. But after he had drilled the ball through goalkeeper Scott Shearer's legs, Davenport made a fantastic interception to clear the ball off the line.

The game had suddenly burst to life and with six minutes left Palace could have been killed off well and truly when McSheffrey raced through one-on-one with Vaesen only to see the keeper beat out his shot.

But within a few seconds the importance of that save had been completely surpassed and with news coming through that events at the JJB Stadium had swung dramatically in their favour, the celebrations began early as the Eagles soared back into the top six.

The only place in NSW showing the final is Scruffy Murphy's on Goulburn Street. Don't know if I'll be able to make it though.

Hammers are a bunch of arrogant toss. I think the best thing I've heard was a Hammers fan saying there was a conspiracy to keep them in Div 1 as they make the average attendances for the Nationwide higher :?

Congratulations Palace!!!!!

I am a Middlesbrough fan, but I have always had a bit of a soft spot for the Eagles. I cant wait to see our teams head to head in the premiereship.

I was also very happy to see the Canary's back up.

The new season is gonna be HUUUUUUUUUGE!!!
