Daily Telgraph is now a union paper

Just been flicking through the Daily Tele and noticed no less than 25 and a half pages on rugby union and only a half a page on the Ashes Test this weekend.

Nice to see the rag is keeping in touch with its readership. Even the SMH this morning has more on the league Test.

That Main Game liftout is all union despite the league Test being on. If I recall, during the season that lift-out gave space to all codes, even on the weeks when there was no union - they still devoted 3 or 4 pages to the rubbish.

Why they couldn't devote a double page spread to the Ashes opener is beyond me.

Fish and Chips for the Telecrap from now on.

I haven't been buying it, much. I did buy it yesterday, but checked first that there was a reasonable amount of League.

I am voting with my wallet and I have told them so in an email.

Go Scotland! If they win, just you watch the arse fall out of the RWC, much like in the Cricket World Cup in Australia when the national side was knocked out.

Jeez all this over reaction. I can see why other codes see us as paranoid, just look at the way you guys act.

It is acceptable. The RUWC is an 'event' and its in our country, while the league test isnt an 'event' and is on the other side of the worlod.

No matter how boring union is whilst the world cup is on it will get a huge amount of media attention.

i just hope that when the RLWC is on in australia the media treats it as an

'EVENT' and not how they normally do

Yeah, but not at the expense of other sports like league. All I was calling for was maybe a double page spread in the Main Game which would shrink the union cov down to a mere 23-and-a-half pages. I'm sure more people would be interested in a decent Ashes preview than some ex-Aussie Scottish rugby player reject.

Why isn't it an event? i think anyone going to the game will find it quite an event, unfortunately we do not have the media power to over hype it. In fact it pisses me off this trend of sports being played in our country being far more important than the same sport being played overseas. Its rediculous the difference in the coverage of the cricket between a one sided series in Australia and a close exciting series like we have in India at the moment, which is being hidden away in the papers. Same with the League. We get no shortage of coverage of the NRL, and now suddenly our national team is about to enter a close series and its not worth reporting. I don't want to read about events, I want to read about sport, no matter where it is played.

Anyway, as the Union have paid for most of their space in the Tele is doesn't really surprise me.

i want it to be an event but its just not classed that way as we dont have the good 'Old Boy' toffy relations and influence in the media.

Just because there is a load of 'event ' news in the nrl off season doesnt mean its not a league paper

The Tele jumps on any bandwagon that comes around. They cover heaps of league during the NRL season, especially around GF time, then when union seems to be big they switch just like that. Remember how much cricket and soccer there was during their respective world cups. It's not a matter of being biased towards one sport or another, they just run with whichever one is in ascendency. At the moment (god knows why) it's union.

Expect to see them try and re-establish their 'no. 1' league and cricket coverage when the union is over, especially as the NRL draws nearer.

yeah - I seem to remember Moffo mentioning this back at rleague when he had someone from the ARU at a lecture.

Apparently the ARU have been paying the paper to receive a certain amount of press over the last few years.

Some of the "articles" that have been ni the non-sports section of the paper over the year reek of paid advertising. Remember the story about union jerseys being more popular than league because they sell more Wallaby jerseys at Mick Simmonds than St George jerseys

Yep, Matthew Horan was the man and he wrote a weekly article in the Sunday Tele on the Union world cup. One thinks him and his editor have been at all the Wallabies games in a gold corporate box. Anyway, all he was virtually doing was putting his name to ARU press releases. Matthew Horan is a piss poor excuse for a journalist.

Besides for that the Tele were paid to promote the ticket arrangements. Winning over the Tele was all they needed to do as the SMH is already a Union paper. Hence its rubbish sales numbers.
