Boyd out of Test contention

Ben Horne AAP Mon, Apr 25, 2011 - 8:24 PM

In-form St George Illawarra fullback Darius Boyd is out of contention for the mid-year Test, after injuring his hamstring in the Dragons' 24-10 Anzac Day win over the Sydney Roosters.

Despite going off in the 61st minute, Boyd was still presented with the player of the match medal in the prestigious game honouring Australia and New Zealand's service people.

His influence on the Dragons this season has been immense, and if fit, would have been difficult to leave out of the Kangaroos side which will be picked this coming Sunday, for the match against the Kiwis on May 6.

Boyd will get scans on the damage to his left hamstring on Monday, but coach Wayne Bennett said his star No.1 was no chance of lining up for Australia.

Interestingly, Boyd said he wasn't expecting to get picked anyway, after being overlooked for Lote Tuqiri in Tim Sheens' first-string Australian Four Nations team last year.

"It's not something I'm really concentrating on. If it happens it happens," said Boyd, who scored shortly after halftime and is expected to miss at least three weeks.

"It's one of those things I suppose. We'll just have to see how it pulls up tomorrow.

"Origin is a big priority for me especially. I just want to get back on the field as soon as I can.

"I'll have to work hard at it."

Boyd's whereabouts next season has been a big discussion point, but the 23-year-old said he was no closer to deciding whether to follow Bennett to Newcastle, stay at the Dragons, or venture to another new club.

Jason Nightingale, Kyle Stanley and Bronx Goodwin will all come into contention for Boyd's fullback spot, with winger Brett Morris admitting the Queensland star leaves a big hole.

"It's a shame, he's been playing really good footy," Morris said.

"I think it's the best we've seen him play as a whole over the past couple of weeks, so it's a shame for him, but we'll wait and see what the scans show and see how we go from there."

We will need to play out of our skins to get within 10 with our current game plan.

But if we run them around and get some players in motion we will be in with a chance, but only if we are prepared to go a pass or two wide coming out of our own end.

Agreed, our only chance is players in motion all day...... fighting in every ruck to get a quick play the ball.... and I know its out there but putting kicks in that they will not be expecting.

The problem with our kicking game is they are always having to kick over the defensive line because play 4 is too predictable and we get dominated in the tackle, so we are kicking on the back foot. I say to the halves get a few metres further back and kick it at a lower angle.

does increase ours chances of winning, bt we are without hayne and the way we played the titans was not convincing. We will still get lapped by the saints, they ARE the bechmark (with storm) and we are a long way off that atm.

The storm were off their game yesterday. Maybe we catch saints on their off day.
Who knows.
Although it's not probable, it is possible we can win.
I give them a chance.
