35-year-old former Bulldogs and Bronco Darren Smith has been called up as a shock replacement in the Roo Tour squad after it was revealed Phil Bailey and Ryan Girdler were to head home because of injury.

Smith is still in England after playing in the Super League comp this year and has signed with the East Coast Tigers in the QLD Cup for next year.

One from left-field.

Go Smithy!

Where did you hear this?

The old man is still in fine condition and could easily do another season in either the NRL or Super League. Throughout a fine season for Saints, Smith was ALWAYS leading the kick chase and was a superb example of professionalism for the young lads to follow.

He won't let anyone down, but surely the mighty Roos are not this badly off?

This reminds me of how the Kiwis pulled Sean Hoppe into the team after sending Toopi home for having a bad attitude.

Why couldn't the Aussies fly in someone in thier prime.

Toopi got sent home because he broke his hand on nigel Vgana.

What the hell does he need another centre for when he has Michael DeVere and Luke Lewis in the Kangaroos squad?

I heard Anderson was interested in calling Jim Dymock up to replace Fitzgibbon and Barry Ward could be on stand by too.

i think we lacked experience badly in the backs during the test. Whilst Devere and Lewis are top players, if memory serves, neither has played in a test match

A hard head with experience is exactly what we need

Besides, Slater, Harris etc etc would not be in training in all likelihood, you chouldn't just ship them across, they'd be out of shape

Cheers,

This is pretty bloody poor form from anderson. Its such a slap into face, in particular to mick devere, but also to players like luke lewis and matt sing who can play center in a pinch or could have had played wing had hegarty be shifted to the centers.

I don't care if he stays with the sharks or not but I hope he never coaches another aussie side.

is he now officially an east cost tiger? If so this would be the first time in a long while that a QLD Cup player has made the aussie team. Who was the last?

It would be great for Easts and the Qld Cup if Smith plays, especially if it is well mentioned that he is with the mighty Tigers next year. As for who was the last to play for Australia from the Brisbane comp. I don't think any have since the Broncos entered in 1988. So have a look at the 1987 team that played NZ and there'd be a few in there, Alfie, Lewis, Backo maybe. I don't remember, it was before my time, but this is probably the last year any BRL player would have played for the roos.

Is it a possibility that De Vere is being frozen out after coming so close to signing with the Sharks, then finally turning his back on Anderson and Cronulla?

I very highly doubt that Smith will actually play. I think he's just being bought in just in case another back gets injured. So De Vere, Sing and Lewis will still be ahead of him on the pecking order.
