Can anyone explain why it is necessary to hand out retrospective medals for GF M.O.Ms before '86 when the Dave Brown Medal existed for these Grand Finals?
last time it was awarded and never on the day as such was early 80's i thought?
as to why it got arsed, god knows and the nrl/new scum do like a history re-write.
Yes it is real, I read an old newspaper from the 1979 grand final and it mentioned Steve Morris winning the Dave Brown Medal.
Another interesting Medal from the good old days that people don't realise is that the Dally M was awarded in 1979 and I have the newspaper Monday sports lift outs from then to prove it. Seems it has only been recognised from 1980 probably because it was the first one broadcast?
I can't comment on the process/decision to review the 1954-85 GFs as I wasn't involved.
Re the Dave Brown Medal - getting info on the Medal is hard to come by. When I wrote a piece a few years back on Brown's career http://www.RL1908.com/Legends/Dave-Brown.htm I found references to the medal, and added it to the end of the article, but came across very little on the medal winners and what year it was first instituted. I haven't seen a compiled list of winners anywhere.....all of which indicates that the medal didn't have a high profile.
