Dave Woods / David Woods

Now were are talking about Benji Marshall and how unlucky he is, some have mentioned Dave Woods (the centre) who played for Parra.

This got me thinking and I seem to recall another bloke named David Woods who was a tough headed front rower who, if my memory serves me correctly was a Parra Junior.
I recall that he went to the Gold Coast Seagulls.

I went to a Parra v Seagulls game a few years back and I was late. The bloke on the radio said Dave Woods had scored and it was 6 - 0.
I thought - Great !!
Until I realised that it was David Woods and not Dave Woods (who was playing for Parra at the time) and the Seagulls were 6 up !!
I could be wrong about this and if I am I stand corrected.

I recall that David Woods (the front rower) later committed suicide on the Gold Coast.

For those that recall these things - how is my memory? or am I just a little confused ? Have I got the wrong name ????

that's correct, the Dave Woods who tragically committed suicide also had a stint with Canberra and Newcastle but never played first grade for Parra.

Thanks! I thought he did play FG but I suppose a quick look at the 700 or so players that have would tell!

David Woods (the centre) was originally from Rankins Springs. He was brilliant but injury prone. He ended up playing with Halifax in the ESL..
David Woods (the centre) I noticed in the last Annual Report is now a Life Member of the Eels.

There are quite a few David Woods in Rugby league... There's a British RL journalist called David Woods as well... and the Coach of Gateshead Thunder is also named David Woods -- I'm not sure if it's David Woods (the centre) or not.

I'd hang onto them right now. But if you want to buy into somewhere in Europe and still be somewhere you can watch Rugby league I'd suggest the South of France... ;-) You'd even be able to watch Alex Chan.

I'm think the Gateshead coach used to be my A grade coach at Merrylands in the mid 90's before going coach a junior rep team at penrith. not 100% sure, i'm trying to find a photo of him to confirm

Dave Woods was a top 3/4. He was excellent..... it was just those injuries.

He would have been a an Aussie Rep and Origin player for sure if it weren't for the those Injuries.

He was one of the classiest 3/4 to ever play for Parra.

I remember a cracking try he scored at Penrith Park. Split them and ran 60 metres.

Yeah I was there.

Also the 2 trys against the Dogs in 95.

Woodsy did score some really good trys.

Funny you guys should mention David Woods.

Keep an eye out in the next few weeks in the media ...

By the way, if it wasn't for injuries he would have gone down as one of the all-time greats. All Class.

What a night that was!! :D

Woods was my favourite player as a kid - had his autograph in gold pen on a footy card from some fan day in around 1995 - I used to have a number 4 on the back of my jersey (a crappy iron-on one which has long since disappeared).

I used to always get excited when I saw his name in the Kangaroos Train-on Squad... but, alas, he never quite made it.
