Faiumu cuts ties with Cowboys

COWBOY David Faiumu has been granted a release from the remainder of his NRL contract and is expected to join Huddersfield in the English Super League next week.
The hooker, who extended his stay with the club last season, was released from the final year-and-a-half of his contract yesterday, allowing him to join the NRL player exodus.
Faiumu could not be contacted for comment yesterday but he is believed to be on his way to the Giants, where he will join fellow former Cowboy Rod Jensen.
Jensen made a similar exit from the Cowboys to Huddersfield last year following four seasons at the club.
North Queensland management confirmed Faiumu would no longer be contracted to the Cowboys but declined to comment on where he would be heading.
The 25-year-old joined the Cowboys in 2004, quickly forming a devastating combination with Aaron Payne as the club's hooker rotation.
Faiumu played 76 games for North Queensland, scoring eight tries, and played in the Cowboys' 2005 grand final loss to the Wests Tigers. He became a New Zealand international in the same year.
But Faiumu has played just four games this season, spending the majority of the year in the Queensland Cup after falling behind Anthony Watts in the club's No. 9 rotation.
The Cowboys have also recently signed George Gatis on a match payments-only deal to further bolster their stocks at dummy-half.
It has been anything but a settled 2008 campaign for Faiumu, who has had to combine his football with court appearances.
He was charged in Townsville earlier this year in relation to an alleged altercation with a 23-year-old man in Rockhampton's CBD last November.
