David Hookes - in induced coma

Victoria's cricket coach and a media critic of many years, David Hookes is in hospital on life support.

He was bashed after allegedly trying to stop a fight outside a Melbourne pub.

He is in a coma.

Pretty awful stuff to happen to anyone - I've criticised Hookes in the past for comments made about people and teams in cricket and outside of cricket. But there is no way anyone with any sense of decency would wish this upon anyone - a 21 year old has been charged and was to face court today - not sure of the outcome.

Disgraceful circumstance to be in - we can only hope he recovers from what looks to be a horrific incident.

looks like it was the security guard at the pub that did it - he was the one arrested.

channel ten said somethig about bad news and the family about to make a media statement. that cant be good...

They are making a decision on whether to turn the life support machine off.

There has been no improvement on his condition. :( :(

We should hear within the hour.

Two Doctors have to come to the same decision. :(

R.I.P David Hookes.

I didnt like him very much but nobody deserves something like this. I feel for his family, friends and especially his close mates like Alan Border and Mike Gibson. Good on ya Hookesy you had a go mate.

Very sad news. He was a fantastic cricketer and will most definately be missed. Our thoughts are with David's Family.

As for the disgraceful person who did this, a very cowardly act, how could anyone bash someone that much. I hope he gets life never to be released.

man...i dont want to judge the guy before we hear all the facts. there are stories about that he had a "massive heart attack" (nine news) induced by the bashing. why did the bouncer chase him for "several hundred metres" (www.smh.com.au) before hitting him? if there was 14 guys fighting out the front of the pub, why did he get involved?

there's plenty of hear/say happening, but nobody really knows what went on besides hookes and the bouncer.

karma will deal with the dude. he'll get whats coming to him.

a sad day for australian sport and society really...

Yes he was certainly an entertaining cricketer and knew how to hook a ball for 6 .. I think he may still hold the record for the fastes fity or century from his World Series Cricket Days... An Absolute tragedy - the point I was trying to make Termy the other day to your testosterone charged comments like - lets meet at the public bar and I'll punch your head in crap ! Thats the problem with resorting to violence.. Maybe the security guard had the same ideas you had.

Another thing I loved about David Hookes was his ability to speak his mind openly regardless of the criticism he copped! Its a shame the good guys go so young!

Cricket has lost a good player, successful coach and even more successful presenter.

But more importantly his friends have lost a close mate, and his family have lost a father, a husband, a brother, a family member - I don't know what that feels like so I can only hope and pray they get through such a tough time and that positives will come of his sudden passing, if that is possible.

Life is fleeting - it comes and goes far too quickly so make the most of it and work out what your priorities are.

f**k I hate bouncers. 90% of the brain defunct morons love nothing more than when the going gets tough only to have to whack 48 year olds from side on when they're not expecting it. And this one was up on charges beforehand?

I've not been a fan of Hookes' outspoken style, but I'll be f**ked if he deserved that. He was here only a week ago with one of the best comebacks I've heard of.

There's an amazing thread on aus.sport.cricket if anyone is keen. It's got the bouncer's address, phone number etc, etc with an article stipulating the details of his bail. One being he has to remain at his house.

Apparently the phone is "off the hook". So to speak.

This would have been a horrible decision for his family to make. I would have hated being in their shoes and would never wish it apon anybody

30 minutes with his brain not getting oxygen would've made it an easy decision to make I reckon. He would never have even regained consciousness let alone live in a vegetive state.

Yes. He has an existing assault charge still waiting to go to trial - what is apparent is that he has a past history of physical violence and yet they let him out on bail despite the fact he assaulted someone who later died.

This shouldn't have anything to do with Hookes' fame - it has everything to do with public decency - common decency. You just can't go around hitting people to the ground like that and expect to stay in the community.

It is disgusting really - pathetic. :x
