Personally, I see it as a big difference between calling Farah a Mediterranean Descendant and Paea, or Inglis, a black merkin. Yes, probably invoke howls of protests now, but I am old school and brought up with ethnic friends, and still friends today, who we always called Mediterranean Descendants and no one was/is ever offended. They give back as good as they get, and no one is ever hurt.

And again it is about the context and whether or not the recipient takes offence.

In any case, it is folly to think that all racism is the same. There are of course different type of racial slurs, some more offensive than others.

In my opninion, it is up to the recipient if they find it offensive. Neither Paea or Farah wanted to take it further. Nowadays of course, the NRL have to investigate and both cases were looked at. But that's where the similarities end. In the Paea/Gallen case, as we know, the NRL stepped in, citing contrary conduct.
