Dean Young Defensive coach

Our defence has been embarrassing for years, and it’s only getting worse. No intent, no line speed, soft contact—we’re one of the easiest teams to play against. Look at the Bulldogs. In less than two years, they’ve gone from a laughing stock to having the best defence in the comp under a new coaching regime. Meanwhile, we’ve had Dean Young in charge of our defence for years, and nothing has improved.

• Our edge defence is a disaster – constantly leaking tries, wingers jamming in, misreads everywhere.

• We have no line speed – teams roll through us like training drills.

• We’re soft in contact – opposition forwards walk up the field, no aggression, no intimidation.

• Zero resilience – once we concede, the floodgates open.

• No improvement year-on-year – we still make the same errors, the same structural issues, the same lack of commitment in defence.

At what point do we stop blaming the players and start looking at the coaching? Defence is about system, attitude, and accountability. Right now, we have none. Yet Young still has a job? Why? Because he’s a club legend? That’s not a good enough reason.

Other clubs make the tough calls and bring in elite defensive minds to rebuild their structures. We just keep rewarding failure. It’s time for a serious change because whatever Young is doing clearly isn’t working.

the Dragons have had zero defensive identity for years. Every season it’s the same old story—leaky edges, passive line speed, no aggression. Dean Young’s been part of the coaching staff in some capacity for ages, yet there’s no sign of improvement. At what point do we actually ask, what does he bring to the table?

We are not at training to see who runs what but at the end of the day Flano is head coach and has to bear the responsibility
If in his eyes Deanno is not a good assistant he should get rid of him because sooner or later if results keep going this way the club will have no alternative but to get rid of Flano
If we are fair dinkum for success, results are everything and should be the only factor when it comes to deciding who the coach should be.

Whilst I will never understand the irrational hatred a grand final winning legend gets on this forum, I agree that whatever is going on with our defensive structures and drills isn't working.
Something needs to change. This team can attack. 24 points and 5 tries should win you a game of football.

One thing I notice is teams more often than not easily get out of their red zone against us.while we struggle to get out of ours.
I'm getting sick of words like leadership and standards getting bandied about during the off season when on the field it looks like there isn't.
Don't get me started , 9 times out of 10 , any team that gets 6 again or a penalty usually scores ......... Let's hope its an early HIC cup and things improve , the trial games were just trial games and we played 2 depleted teams ..........
