Substitute Woewoful with Stupido and you have an idea of what I was initially on about ;-)

Cupido is carrying plenty of baggage, but he does have talent.

I well remember his early promise with the Lions.

That being said, you wouldn't want to be paying too much or offering more than a 1 year trial contract.

Assuming we can't snare McLaren or Gaspar through the PSD, I wouldn't be totally diverse to having a punt on either Cupido or Norman.

The headcase factor is something of a worry, but I still recall the poo-pooing that the Kangaroos received when they took on Martin Pike.

This PSD looms as one with more experienced options than normal, but no real gun standouts.

Under the circumstances, its probably worth punting on a wayward talent given that he'll not only come cheap, but will be on his last chance.

It's the weight problems that worry me.

For every Martin Pike there is a Justin Murphy ...

Gaspar will be available at #3

Carlton won't draft him and Collingwood have no need for him.

At this point, you would think Carlton would take McLaren, although if Selwood remains available, they would be sorely tempted.

Collingwood would more than likely run with the likes of Lappin, but its not as if their defence is in great shape, relying heavily on the almost geriatric Wakelin and the honest, but unremarkable, Prestigiacomo.

With McLaren likely to be gone, and with a possible eye to extra key defensive depth due to Hay leaving, Hawthorn would certainly give strong consideration to Gaspar (assuming he doesn't re-sign with the Eagles).

That being said, Karl Norman has more obvious talent and less injury hang-ups than Gaspar, but it would require some bravery to choose the former Blue first.

Karl Norman - Yeah, if it came down to a choice being this head case and stupido - I'd much prefer Norman.

Gaspar would be a good pick-up for the Hawks, kind of hoping you do go for someone else though as he'll certainly fall through to Richmond if you do with Sheedy drafting Campo (For god knows what reason)

I think he thinks they're on the cusp of a premiership and the class outwide of Messers Cole & Camporeale will provide the missing links.

Of course, I'd laugh harder at Sheeds if it weren't for the sobering memory of 1993...

I'd suspect that Gaspar will go to Hawthorn, but it wouldn't be a monty.

I note that Wirrpunda still hasn't signed with West Coast yet. He could certainly throw the cat among the pidgeons. I couldn't imagine Collingwood passing him over.

The Wirrpunda returning home talk happens everytime he has a new contract ;-)

True,

Although West Coast would be feeling abnormal salary cap pressure and they are leaving it until late in the day...

I'd be surprised if he doesn't stay in blue & gold though.

Would Hawthorn have a need for his type? I would see Gaspar as more your type due to the issues they are sure to suffer from in the spine for at least two years. Gaspar could be a good 2 year pick up. David has some silky skills and I love watching him play but he is very 1 dimensional. His injuries have slowed him down considerably and I think Sydney showed in the GF how he can be exposed.

If he fell through to Richmond and we took him ... I would have some big concerns about our defence next year. Quick small forwards would tear us apart worse than this year. (Not too many tall forwards kicked bags against us this year, but Milne, Williams, Yze & Matera all did)

Fair point.

Going for Wirrpunda would hardly meet my favoured key recruiting criteria of addressing team balance & structure. Hawthorn isn't too badly served for peripherals in both defence and attack, although Wirrpunda would add polish and could ease the stress on Hodge. I say this because we have struggled with kick-outs, hence the common need for Hodge to rush from wherever he is to take up the duty.

Gut feeling is that both Hawthorn & Richmond have a more pressing need for a key defensive type. The way its going, the only key defensive options worth looking at will be Gaspar & Norman.

I feel that Norman carries greater risk, but also has greater upside, although I can't be certain how well Gaspar has thrown-off his long-term injury woes.

Hawthorn would definitely prefer Dylan McLaren, but I can't see him getting past Carlton. I also don't think they'll risk it and run with Norman, so they'll probably plum for Gaspar.

We both know that Richmond would take Gaspar, but do you think they would punt on Norman?

All above correspondence on Gaspar can now be ruled inoperative...

Travis has re-signed with West Coast for the 2006 season.
