Dear Jim,

Allow me to extend my personal gratitude at doing what none of us here at News Ltd truly did in our brieflittle dabblein Rugby League.....totally screw up the game from the inside.

Citing that unruly NZ rouge Smith was a masterstroke. Some may complain (including Craig himself) that after the fourth or fifth time it got a bit tiresome for the media, especially my boys at the Telegraph who were forced to make up the same bullshit sensationalist stories again and again. But still, Rugby League was the loser, we were the winners. And, you managed to get 99% of all league fans offside with this call! How much did it cost you again?

I must say it's been a while since I've been to the footy (1971 in fact). As you can imagine, I have been terribly preoccupied of lately, what with that nice young chap John O'Neill and all.....did you realise that Rugby Union was the better game of the two codes? I didn't until he kindly pointed that out to me at a function some time ago.

Nevertheless, there comes a time when all us mere mortals have to depart this world for a much bigger stage, and I want to reassure you that Lachlan is absolutely committed to your future....heck, Jim, keep this up and we won't be able to afford you. Why waste your talents on the game of rugby league? A career in Canberra could be calling you.....I could even ring my contacts in the Labor Party and try to get you a plum little seat in Sydney suburbia.....far from the Kogarah district of course.....The Hon. James Hall - Prime Minister? Can I be theGovernor-General?

Anyway Jim, I must be off. John Ribot has just handed in this beaut little plan to take over the Romanian handball league, and broadcast it all over the world, resulting in mega-profits for all.

Till then,

Rupert
