I'm keen on getting a like a Visa debit card and my ma was saying that St George has a good one.

Is this true?

Can ya explain it all to me?

If anyone else who reads this has one, let us know who you're with and what it's like (Bushie don't bother responding ya bum, I know you've got one)

not much to tell mags, you just need an account. being over 18 and a permanent resident/citizen you get one automatically. they may deny you one based on your terrorist inspired looks, but probably not...

the way iot works is it takes the money str8 out of your account when you press the cr button. but ur not borfrowing off the bank, you can only spend what you have. aside from that it works exactly like a visa credit card, ie you can use it online for purchases, on the phone, anywhere visa is accepted.

the one thing to note is you get 2 balances though, and the one you need to pay attention to is your available. visa purchaes go on a 12 day hold to allow merchants to do thier banking and marry up thier visa stubbs to your purchases. you also need to be wary when doing manual visa purchases (with the click clack machine) for this reason, as that can and will overdraw your account.

Too easy... I knew what I debit card was, but my ma was saying something like I needed like $5,000 or some wacked number in my bank.

Umm, I'm getting the sh*ts a bit with Commonwealth and I definately want a credit/debit card... but I wouldn't use the credit card enough to make the annual fee worth while. Mainly for internet purchases and things like staying in hotels and such.

Your Ma? Who are you, Cletus?

Teachers Credit Union craps all over St George, but you're not allowed in. Muhahahaha!

I have one at the Greater. I had to open the account with $500 minimum but it basically works the same way as a credit card but your using your own money. In a way it's also like an eftpos card but you can use it for shopping over the net etc.

I've got one with Police Credit Union and it's great, just gotta be careful not to overdraw. The bank allows you to overdraw, but when you do obviously they want the money back and then they slap you with a fee. So if your overdraw 5c you get a fee. Mines about 8 bucks but I'm pretty sure the banks would be higher.

P.S: Don't think you can get one from Police Credit Union though.

It's the same with the Teacher's Credit Union, so maybe it's standard of the 'style'? You'd have to have family who are teachers (or be one yourself) to get an account, though.

You dont need any crazy amount like that in your account.
I got mine when i was going on a cruise and apart from cash and travellers cheques visa was all that was accepted.
I have a feeling that i put something like $200 in it open it but i cant be 100%.
I love it i use it for everything paying bills and shopping and its extra good because the fees are less for pos purchases.

I've just signed up for one last week.
It's great, St George customer service is by far better than Commbank.
I did not have a St George account and wanted to make one so I am eligible to use the debit card.

You can actually make an account on the spot at the bank, and also apply for a debit card ON THE SPOT!
All you need is to bring in 100 points or so of identification.

I was expecting forms to fill out.

The card is looking very good too.
You can obviously purchase items where only credit cards are excepted, or simply use CR (credit) with eftpos.
By doing so you will not use up your 10 free transactions.
You have unlimited CR usage, so if you pay for items at Woolworths through EFTPOS, just use the CR instead of SAV (Savings)on the keypad.
Works exactly the same.

You wont over spend on credit card usage, you only spend what you have in your bank account.

If you're a student be sure to bring along some proof of studying and end course date.
Being a student all monthly bank fee's will be waived.

I cant think of anything else on the top of my head, thats all I can come up with for now.

I really encourage you to join, the banking services are way better than Commbank.
The internet banking is good too!

Correct. I don't know about you CWB but unlike MrC I don't pay a $6 a month fee and I can have as many withdrawals as I like.

I have Visa with St George the only thing is you get charged every year for the pleasure of using their money and every year since I've had it the fee has gone up I hope it stops soon.

MrC's account will be fee free if he maintains a balance above $1000 (unlikely i know)

madeline is that a credit card though? most CC's have an annual fee, those that dont, get you some other way..it all balances out...rule of thumb...avoid credit cards like the plague they are....
