Decision time for Israel Folau

THE chances of Brisbane luring Israel Folau north are likely to be determined as early as Tuesday. Melbourne Storm has told the teenager it needs an answer on a contract extension early next week.

Folau is believed to be leaning towards a return to southeast Queensland where his family lives, but the Gold Coast Titans have, in effect, ruled themselves out of the race. The Titans are devoting their energies to signing Canberra duo William Zillman and Neville Costigan, with dashing fullback Zillman believed to be close to agreeing to terms.

The Broncos have made no secret of their interest in Folau, with the club indicating it will step up efforts to sign him if the club's young outside backs do not produce in the early rounds of the premiership. Folau flew to Brisbane on Wednesday night to see his family and discuss his future but did not meet Broncos officials.

Melbourne is keen to resolve the Folau situation soon after Monday night's clash with the New Zealand Warriors. It also has Queensland lock Dallas Johnson off contract.

Broncos chief executive Bruno Cullen yesterday said reports that Folau was close to signing a four-year $1.6 million deal with the club were "not even close to the mark". Cullen made no secret of the club's interest in the Logan Brothers product but said reports this week of his impending signing had come out of the blue.

Cullen said the club was always looking for top-line players, and with skipper Darren Lockyer off contract at the end of next year there could be money available for a marquee signing, but it wouldn't be for a centre like Folau. "Karmichael Hunt is ready to take up Locky's mantle at the club and Justin Hodges is here for another four years," Cullen said. "When Locky goes there's an opportunity, salary-cap wise, that if we haven't got someone in house then we can go outside and get someone."

Canberra, which re-signed halfback Todd Carney yesterday, has conceded it is under pressure to hold on to Zillman and Costigan, with both keen to return to Queensland.

Zillman close? Will suck for the Raiders if found true.

 wasnt carney a sure thing to leave canberra?
now zillman's close to agreeing to terms with the titans?

surely you guys learnt somethings about the media's knowledge of Canberra. Zillman is high on our priorities list, he'll be re-signed shortly imo.
Will probably mean we'll lose Dobson (who cares lol) and maybe even Campese.

I just wish he'd stop stuffing around and let everyone know what he's doing. If he's agreed to go to the Bronco's then just announce it and get it over and done with. We've got Dallas Johnson waiting to re-sign but can't until Folau makes up his mind if he hasn't already. Fair enough it's a tough decision but it's not like he's just been told all of a sudden to decide, he's had months to work it out.

Good to see the media reporting Zillman is all but signed by the Titans. That means he is a lock to stay in Canberra.

The fact that Folau has postponed the announcement until " after " the Storm game Monday night wouldn't fill Storm supporters which much confidence

If he was staying with the team you'd assume he'd announce it before the game to give the club a boost like Todd Carney did with the Raiders. It suggests only one thing really - he is gone.

Thats by the by anyway, unless the contract gets ripped up or lost over the weekend, he is already heading to Brisbane in 2009.

I'd be happy to lose Cositgan to retain Zillman. We have a plethora of backrowers but Zillman needs to be retained.

Hopefully Carney's decision will have an influence of what Zillman does so we can start to produce another quality side.

The Raiders boss also revealed Gold Coast had made an offer for Maroons forward Neville Costigan.

Furner also commented on the get-out clauses that Costigan and fullback William Zillman have for the end of this season. "Zilly had until March 30 to advise us if wanted to test the market," he said. "He has advised us he will but we are going to try and use the time between now and March 30 to re-sign him. "Neville has until June, I think, to let us know if he is going use that option. I believe there is an offer from Gold Coast for him." Furner has a dozen players from the NRL off contract and admitted Carney's rich deal to would inevitably result in some departures.

"We won't be able to keep all of them now, that's for sure," he said. Nevertheless, the club is hopeful that its nucleus of young stars will want to play out the next chapter of their careers alongside Carney. "I think Todd staying was a fairly crucial decision. "He was our priority and now there's a lot of other guys to keep. "We hope they will want to stay because of Todd, but there is less money for everyone else."

Looks like it may be costigan rather then Zillman who is close to agreeing to terms with the titans. That report suggests an offer is already on the table from the titans for Nev, but nothing as yet for Zillman, and also suggests with TC under wraps, Zillman is now #1 priority along with Henry
