Defence issues

Why do a lot of our players, especially our backs, have some of the sh*ttiest and most ineffective defence in the game.

I'm getting sick and tired of this grabbing at a player bullsh*t. Benji is the worst.

One thing I don't like seeing in defence is the grabbing a players shoulders and then falling backward hoping the player comes down with you.

So many issues can come from this, injuries, fast play the balls for the opposition, attackers able to get off-loads away, our defence having players lying around the play-the-ball and giving away simple and stupid penalties.

Not to mention it is also one of the easiest types of tackles to break out of.

When will our players, especially backs learn to tackle properly, until they do, we will continue to leak points. For a team with almost twice as many wins as losses, our for and against differential should be significantly higher.

But it's almost bloody even.

This, more than anything, will cause us major grief over the coming weeks if it isn't rectified.

If our defence was better, the Cowboys would have struggled to score two tries, Benji's goalkicking woes wouldn't have mattered at all.

We have a points differential of 18. Hopeless.

We rank 7th for points scored, 5th for defence and 7th for points differential.

Thats gives a pretty clear indication as to where we should be on the ladder.

No player in the NRL knows how to tackle probably.
Dallas Johnson had the correct technique. It's more a wrestle than a tackle these days.

I put it to you that some have far better techniques than others.

Johnson, Gibbs, Ellis, Fulton, Stagg, Luck, Plum, Gallen, Farah, C.Smith all have pretty good techniques and are very effective in tackles.

Surely putting your shoulder, and arms into the tackle and driving forward is a better menthod than grabbing shoulders and essentially making the player trip over your body as you fall backwards, hoping that they will fall down as well.

Another is that grabbing at arms rubbish. They have made a relatively basic part of the game so bloody hard and complicated simply because they are too scared to put their bodies on the line.

The centres on average make 1 tackle every 5 minutes or so (20 tackles a game)

The wingers make maybe 2-3 a half

But their tackles are generally very important as they are more likely to be preventing tries than any other tackles.

last nights first 30 was pretty abysmal, however ive been very happy with our scrambling defence lately. we seem to cover up line breaks pretty well these days. theres always more tigers players then opposition players when a team makes a break these days.
