R.I.P. Dick. Deepest sympathies and condolences to his family and friends. I hope that the club arranges black arm bands for Friday.
Then I think someone better alert the club as the morons running it barely realise it's the Dragon's 100 years. Unlikely someone in there knows a former great of the club from 50 years ago has passed away. More chance them cutting a cake at half time for an ex-Steeler's birthday than commemorating a former great.

The one that FF didn't want anyone else to have.

Big, rangy and very fast and the precursor to the impact edge forward.

So sad to lose another from a time when we were truly the Titans of the sport.

One of Whitehaven's finest.
Did a wonderful job for us in 1965 when Sticks Provan retired.....Dick was as you say OT a big rangy forward with surprising speed....caused the opposition plenty of headaches every time he touched the ball...including the Kangaroos....had a wonderful offload a rarity in todays game......dont make em like that anymore unfortunately....he was Saints through and through with time at St George and St Helens....Dick was 85

Sadly there are more of that great team upstairs than downstairs these days

Time has gone so quickly but the memories of their deeds still remain fresh for those of us lucky enough to have seen them play.

Hopefully that welcoming orchestra of saints upstairs don’t strike up “Oh when the saints come marching in” again anytime soon.

Record signing on fee when we brought him in 64. Perhaps didn't live up to that money but still did a good job. Interesting point was that he was a bad asthmatic and the dry Australian conditions made it worse ( it's normally the other way around ) so perhaps that's why we didn't get the player he was from 58 to 63 , a bullocking player that used to make outside backs life hell. A forbear to Bob McCarthy type forwards out in the backs style but Proven/Walsh as coaches got him to play closer to the ruck so that perhaps didn't play to his strengths.

Your last part is very true and led to many people believing his handling was suspect but for sure whilst he was in the Big Red V he was getting the ball in much tighter situations than he ever did when playing for the pommies.

He had a great physique and a very distinctive running style.

I remember running onto the SCG one day when the full time whistle blew and getting his autograph (I wish I could find that book it had 100's of autographs in it) and when I got back to mum & dad they asked what did he say and I said "I don't know I couldn't understand him" lol for sure it would have been one of the 1st times I had heard such an accent. Similar happened with Robin Gourley lol.

A golden Saint from a golden era where they bred them tough , but as has already been said , the man had the prerequisite skills of the champion English forwards of the day - great off loading skills . Certainly a rarity in today’s game of bash and barge .

Rest easy Dick and thanks for some wonderful memories.
