I love Joel, but it'll never happen. The old guard selectors will pick the "incumbents" rather than form players. FMD there is even talk that Slater will still get the FB gig !

Sounds like the same selectors that picked our ashes team will be picking our national rl squad !

I watched it. They didn't focus too much on the Eels but did give Reddy a rap and showed a highlights package of him in the Panthers game. Mark Geyer said he should be picked on the Kangaroo tour this year as he was a rep player in the making.

I very much noticed it. Thanks for this thread because it reminded me to send in an email about it. Here's what I just sent:

G'Day Blokes,

I found MG's comments re: Joel Reddy last week very interesting. Joel Reddy would serve as a most reliable backup for the Kangaroos as the end of the year. Importantly, he can play both wing and fullback as well which is always handy.

But seriously, what are the chances that people who deserve these spots are actually going to get them? What are the chances that the squad will be picked on form instead of repuation - most especially since we embarassingly handed over the World Cup last year and thus incumbency should mean little if anything.

And it's not just Joel, either. Luke Burt is also showing the form to warrant consideration. Like Joel, he can also play throughout the three-quarter line. In addition, Luke can also use a ball like a half and could thus fill in - at a pinch - as a utility on the bench. Luke can also kick goals (22 from his last 23), field goals (has won games this year) and can kick in general play (including 40/20s).

Surely there's few, if any, wingers with better form and more to offer than Luke Burt. Surely there's few, if any, centres who have the defensive ability, safety under the high ball and ability to find the line than Joel Reddy.

So, seriously, what are the chances of these two realistically making the squad that will be sent over to Europe?

In addition, what other players do you think are in this same position, where they have great form but will possibly (probably?) be overlooked due to the tendency to pick the incumbents that failed us at the World Cup?

Cheers,
Parra Jesus

i would still rather hodges inglis jennings lyons at this stage to be honest

Then go support Brisbane, Melbourne, Penrith or Manly then. I'd much rather an under-rated Parramatta bred player who always gives 100% and performs well above his talent level, any day of the week.

When the Green and Gold is pulled on it's got nothing to do with Clubs. Wanting someone in the team just because they play for Parramatta is stupid.

I'd want Hodges and Inglis in the centres before anyone else, including Joel - who I love to death.

I would be very surprised if if Hayne wasn't the only the Eel picked for Australia.
Even if we win the premiership i still can't the selectors picking anyone other than Hayne in the Australian squad.
It will be all the Slaters, Inglis, Cameron Smith, thurston etc that get picked. Even if Kimmorely is fit he won't get picked.

My mistake. I thought he meant who'd rather play for the Eels. My apologies Hindy111.

I agree.

Kimmorley should wear the 7 for Australia because he is the best hafback we have. Hell, I'd say he's the best player in the competition.

As for us, I'd say HaHa will be the only one picked. I'd say our next best chance would actually be Mortimer but there's no chance they'll send him. Hindmarsh should be a walk up but he won't even get a look in. If Mateo has changed back to Australia then he might be an outside chance if we go well and he plays out of his skin.

The likes of Reddy and Burt should at least get a mention but they won't. The likes of the Morris twins will get the nod ahead of them while the likes of Boyd and Williams will have more of a chance of holding their spot ahead of our guys even if their teams tank and they play like sh*t.

Such is the nature of the rep scene, unfortunately.
