If I think Adelaide and Perth are unworthy of being included in any stats because of their low poulations in comparison to the other cities covered by OZTAM, does that mean if I ignore them I'm right?

No, it doesn't.
Regional West Australia is that small of a TV market, that WIN is combination of Channel 9 and Channel 10 TV content. I think Tasmania is the same.

Outside of Sydney and Brisbane there are 4.5 million people, in WA and SA there is less than 1 million. Victoria has only 1.4 million outside Melbourne. League would rate OK in WA as there are plenty of expats living there. Do you think AFL would be travelling anywhere near as well as it is if it wasn't for expats?

Also why can't the NRL be transparent with where all the money is going. With TV rights here and overseas, merchandising, sponsors etc there seems to be quite alot of money. I can't see why we can't have 18 or 20 teams. But firstly I want to know what they are doing with it? The AFL publishes their finances, why can't we?

Yes you're right GM it was about 1989-90, I remember watching the Sunday match of the day live here in Melbourne, also getting Late Night League.

Tasmania has Southern Cross, which is a mixture of 7 and 10.

Like I said, it has nothing to do with their population and everything to do with their importance to the broadcasters bidding for the rights! Channel Nine are not going to fork over more money for the NRL rights because the NRL rates higher in places it doesn't collect advertising money, which is what we're talking about.

And how does Kerry get money from 9 advertising in Adelaide and Perth?

He doesn't own them.

Thanks Witty. I thought it was 2 not 3 Commercial FTA stations in Tassy. I wonder what the news readers say when they turn to weather; “Now for a look at the map of Tasmania……………”

That all happened under Channel 10’s coverage. Channel 9 seemed to be providing adequate Rugby League coverage in Melbourne until PBL signed up to cover the AFL in 2001,

I'm not asking them to fork over more money and I'd love to see any figures you'd care to hand over that compare advertising revenue from Perth/Adelaide and country NSW/Qld.

I'm merely pointing out that people who assume that AFL has a fan base that is much larger than Rugby League's fan base are wrong. What the AFL have is a tradition of the punters paying for the club via memberships and they've fostered that since day one. Rugby League clubs generate their money in different ways to AFL.

When the TV ratings are analysed Australia-wide and on an equal footing, there is not a struck match between the NRL and the AFL. Their advantages are that they have live matches going into NSW and Qld and they have more matches on FTA TV.

On Friday nights when the AFL and NRL split the country, the NRL rates higher than the AFL 80%+ of the time.

You are only very partly right. The reason AFL got more apart from the Capital cities was the live component of games. The AFL has 4,the NRL will only have 1 on FTA TV for starters. You are wrong to omit the rural /regional areas of Oz.NSW and QLD particularly along the coast have bigger regionals Newcastle,Illawarra, Canberra,Nth Qld,Sunshine and Gold Coast.
Rugby league has only just about to begin to really push and market the code in Vic.And whilst live coverage of NRL has not been available to WA and SA and Tasmania, the AFL figures for the G/F in particular are really out of kilter to reality, with the gap being a damn side smaller.

Kerry Packer dead at 68

Tuesday Dec 27 09:22 AEDT
Media magnate and Australia's richest man Kerry Packer has died, Nine Network announces.

Today Show announcer Richard Wilkins said he had just been handed official confirmation of Mr Packer's death at 68.

He said a statement from Tony Ritchie, Nine head of news, said: "Mrs Kerry Packer and her children James and Gretel sadly report the passing last evening of her husband and their father Kerry.

"He died peacefully at home with his family at his bedside.

"He will be lovingly remembered and missed enormously. Arrangements for a memorial service will be announced."

Let's see if James can remember to look after the NRL.

wonder how this will affect the afl bid

Won't affect it at all. The deal is in place. Neither party can back out of it now. The only way they won't show it is if 7/10 match 9s bid.

Judging on the rhetoric and reading between the lines I am convinced the AFL will accept Nein's bid even if 7/10 match the offer.

They can't. 7/10 own the first & last bidding rights.
