Yeah, defence has been a real shock this year.
We know they can score tries - and there's still plenty of talent to execute on attack, but it means nothing if the resolve to put in the hard work on D has gone... and that's a sure sign that they aren't mentally "all in" for another title.
I get it though - they've done something that many thought impossible in the modern era by winning four premierships back-to-back.. and when you've established your dynasty as the best since the 1956-66 Dragons, what else is there to prove? 4 is tough, no way could they beat 11.. so that's got to loosen things a bit. They've gone one better than the early '80s Eels.
That's partly where the losses in the forwards have hurt the Panthers. Whilst guys like To'o and edwards are great on kick returns, the forwards are the grunt workers having to take the second and third hit ups usually. Also, and more importantly, the front rowers are the defensive glue in the centre of the ruck. Guys like Leota, Fisher-Harris, Lenui were very good defenders who could at times intimidate opposing sides. The presence of all three would then enable Martin to take a few more risks in defence going for his trademark big hits. Lindsay Smith isn't a bad front rower, but he certainly doesn't have any real intimidation factor like a JFH or Spencer, nor the leadership aspects of a JFH.
The other thing is that 5 years of high performance leading to rep honours for many key Panthers players, along with making the GF all those years, the physical toll is catching up with some of those players. I suspect that's why Cleary and now Edwards (to name two), have been getting these niggling soft tissue injuries which have seen them miss quite a few games over the last two seasons especially. This would also lead to a mental slump as, despite the best efforts of any coaching staff, you are going to get a lull in hunger and desire.
